‘Citizens, expats must take measures to prevent fires’

-

KUWAIT CITY, May 3: Citizens and expatriates must take all the necessary measures to prevent fire incidents which are common during summer, says Colonel Khalel Al-Ameer from the Public Relations and Media Department of Kuwait Fire Service Directorate (KFSD).

In a press statement, Al-Ameer called on the public to be careful and to strictly comply with fire safety regulations. He affirmed the department is keen on raising public awareness on the dangers of fire. He cited the situation in houses where electricity load is high, warning that this could lead to electric short circuit - one of the common causes of fire. He advised the public to follow safety procedures and reduce their electricity load. He explained this can be done by switching off electrical appliances or gadgets not in use, in addition to setting the air conditioning unit thermostat to 25 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit) - the suitable cooling temperature.

He also stressed the need for periodic maintenance of air conditioning devices and cleaning them through certified maintenance company to guarantee optimum performance and safety of users. He pointed out the importance of inspecting the circuit breaker, which is designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit as its basic function is to detect a faulty condition and to interrupt current flow.

He urged parents and guardians to sit with their household members; especially children and youths, to discuss emergency and fire prevention plans, such as avoiding the use of mobile chargers while sleeping and turning off all electronic devices from the main switch to avoid electric overload in electricity outlets and their distributors.

He also underscored the need to put inflammable items like lighters and matchboxes far from the reach of children who should not play in elevators and allow them to use the lift only with the supervision of an adult.

He stressed the importance of installing smoke and fire detectors as well as fire extinguishers in various parts of the house, and everyone must learn how to use them. He added these simple guidelines could save many lives and properties if followed properly, indicating such small warning devices will lessen losses and damages.
