High time for change

- By a concerned Kuwaiti citizen

For as far back as I can remember, the message of education being the main tool for the development of society has been ringing in my ears. The message was clear and understood by all, including the increasingly powerful Islamist blocks in the Kuwaiti National Assembly. Ultraconservative Islamist members of Parliament understood the message so well it became their obsession. Throughout the past 30 years or so, the extremist Islamist elements in our National Assembly have been vehemently obsessed with legislating laws that affect education from every angle imaginable. Such laws have imposed segregation on our universities, attempted to segregate private schools, prohibited dance, and attempted to prohibit music, culture and arts. The legislated laws have also meddled with the curricula of education in general and the subject of religion in particular starting from kindergarten all the way up to university level. If I were Minister of Education, I would take a closer look at what children aged 7 are being required to read and memorize in religion class. I would reconsider the obsession with memorization and pay more attention towards comprehension. Brainwashed individuals can memorize but geniuses comprehend.

It is truly high time for change. The religion card, the experiment with our vulnerable youth has had its chance at the National Assembly and has failed comprehensively and miserably. In my estimate, it will take Kuwait another 15-20 years to repair the damage done to our susceptible youth through this failed democratically legislated experiment. The Islamist block, especially the ultra-conservative elements of our National Assembly, who have the audacity to speak out at a time of mourning and grief, against proactive measures being studied by Minister of Education to fix this failed experiment, need to sit it out this time around.

May I remind them Kuwait is mourning the death of innocent civilians. May I remind them, the death was caused by a barbaric terror attack perpetrated by young extremist, ultraconservative Islamist elements of our society. I say, enough is enough. We have heard enough from their likes. They have had their chance to shine, and they have failed completely. Concede and admit failure. I would be more concerned with showing compassion and love towards the families of the deceased and those injured, some who remain in critical condition, rather than worry about what the Minister of Education is attempting to fix in the failed Islamist experiment.

I hope everyone agrees with me. Kuwait needs more geniuses and less brainwashed individuals.

It is high time for change and for decision making at the highest level. Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education, you have a sworn responsibility to accomplish your job the best interest of Kuwait and its people. Difficult as they may be, curative decisions have to be made now, keeping in mind Kuwait is facing the most difficult period since its establishment as a State.
