Palmeiras rout Sao Paulo 4-0

NEW YORK, June 29, (Agencies): The New York Red Bulls took their time getting used to the iconic Yankee Stadium on Sunday but once they found their feet they were too strong for rivals New York City FC, scoring three in the second half en route to a 3-1 win.

Watched by a crowd of more than 48,000, the home team needed only six minutes to take a 1-0 lead through Thomas McNamara but the Red Bulls hit back through Bradley Wright-Phillips just after the break.

Chirs Duvall put the visitors ahead five minutes later and Matt Miazga made the game safe in the 73rd minute.

The Red Bulls, who scored three times in a league game for the first time this season, moved into fourth in the Eastern Conference. City are ninth.

The Red Bulls also won the inaugural derby in May.

In Portland, the Timbers beat Seattle 41 for their second win over the Sounders in two weeks. Portland scored a 3-1 win over the Sounders in the US Open Cup.

The Sounders are second in the West, three points behind leaders Vancouver. The Timbers are now just a point behind Seattle in third.

Palmeiras scored twice in each half to beat Sao Paulo 4-0 on Sunday and keep their rivals from taking over the Brazilian league lead.

Sao Paulo would have overtaken Sport with a win at Palmeiras’ Allianz Parque, but they never got close to getting the three points. Sao Paulo dropped to fourth in the table with 17 points, two behind northeastern club Sport, which drew 1-1 at Chapecoense on Saturday.

It was Sao Paulo’s first loss since they hired Colombian coach Juan Carlos Osorio, who was sent off Sunday for complaining with the referee at halftime. The six-time champion hadn’t lost in six matches.

Striker Leandro Pereira, defender Victor Ramos, forward Rafael Marques and Argentine striker Jonathan Cristaldo scored for Palmeiras, which jumped to 11th in the standings. It was the team’s first win since the debut of coach Marcelo Oliveira, a two-time Brazilian champion with Cruzeiro in 2013 and 2014.

Palmeiras, the Brazilian club with the most national titles, had already beaten Sao Paulo 3-0 the last time the teams faced each other earlier this year.
