Red Sox ring changes, Dombrowski appointed

New York, Aug 19, (Agencies): The Boston Red Sox announced an overhaul of their management on Wednesday, appointing veteran executive Dave Dombrowski as the club’s new president of baseball operations.

The Major League Baseball giants said Dombrowski would take over from outgoing president and chief executive Larry Lucchino, who has resigned.

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington was also confirmed to be stepping down although he would assist Dombrowski during a transitional period.

Cherington’s exit raised eyebrows as Red Sox owner John Henry, who also owns English Premier League side Liverpool, had recently said he expected him to remain as GM for a “long time.”

Dombrowski, 59, joins Boston from the Detroit Tigers, who fired him on August 4 after 13 years.

Dombrowski has also served long stints with the Montreal Expos, Miami Marlins during a 27-career in the executive ranks of Major League Baseball.

The shake-up comes with Boston enduring another miserable season.

Despite a slew of new players and one of the highest total payrolls in baseball, the Red Sox are languishing in last place in the American League East and look certain to miss the playoffs.

The New York Yankees placed right-hander Bryan Mitchell on the 7-day concussion list on Tuesday.

Mitchell suffered a small nasal fracture after he was struck in the face by a line drive off the bat of exYankee Eduardo Nunez on Monday night.

He remained under observation Tuesday.

The Yankees recalled left-hander Chris Capuano from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Mitchell’s spot on the roster.

Philadelphia third baseman Maikal Franco has given the Phillies reasons to be optimistic during a dreadful season.

Now, it looks like Franco’s season might be coming to a premature end. The rookie is headed for a stint on the disabled list with what team officials are calling a “small nondisplaced fracture” of his left wrist.

It had been widely speculated recently that the Philadelphia Phillies would trade second baseman Chase Utley to a contending team soon. But general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. put the brakes on that speculation.

Amaro said Utley “is likely to be with the Phillies for the rest of the year.”

New York Mets veteran reliever Bobby Parnell is headed to the disabled list after struggling over the weekend and suffering two losses to the Pirates.
