Rosberg seeks talks with Hamilton
Mercedes drivers discuss racing rivalry
MEXICO CITY, Oct 29, (Agencies): Nico Rosberg wants to clear the air with newly-crowned triple world champion Lewis Hamilton when the Mercedes team gathers at the ‘high altitude’ Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez ahead of this weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix.
Four days after the spectacular and tumultuous United States Grand Prix in Texas, where the pair clashed on lap one before Hamilton secured a bold, titleclinching triumph, the 30-year-old German wants an explanation of their wheel-banging duel.
He made this clear in the aftermath of Sunday’s drama, when his disappointment was clear to the world and he accused the 30-year-old Briton of going a ‘step too far’ with his aggression.
Hamilton rejected Rosberg’s claims, saying he had won the inside line for the corner with a superior start off the grid, but the German disagreed.
“I think it’s pretty clear,” said Rosberg. “I’m ahead mid-corner and I have a right to a piece of track and he’s driving me off the road and banging into me.
“There was contact, it seemed quite heavy contact on the steering wheel because we banged wheels, so that’s not on — it’s one big step too far, which is not good.
“It needs to be discussed. And I’m not sure about anything going forward.”
But Rosberg, who struggled to hide his feelings after the race, conceded: “It wasn’t the key to the race because the main thing was my mistake.
“I got it wrong,” he said, of his late unforced error that gifted victory and the title to Hamilton. “And it’s really tough to lose the race like I did. It was a tough day”.
While the Mercedes drivers discuss their racing rivalry, their engineers — in common with most teams — will focus on preparation for the first race at altitude in the modern ‘turbo era’.
The Mexico track is at an altitude of 2,200 metres and will test the cooling efficiency and reliability of the turbo engines to their limits.
“The issue is going to be cooling, for sure,” said Renault’s Remi Taffin. “You have the same amount of energy coming from the engine and much less air to cope it.
“The other thing is the turbo ... To try to maintain the power output, you need to rev the turbo much higher than normal.
“Obviously, we have done a lot of simulation but we know that we are going somewhere we don’t know”
Mercedes management, meanwhile, will try to keep the team happy by avoiding a split in the garage and face more questions about supplying power units to Red Bull.
Interest in the Red Bull link was revived following F1 ring-master Bernie Ecclestone’s revelation that the former champions believed they had an agreement with Mercedes in place, in July, when they gave notice to quit their deal with Renault.
It remained unconfirmed, however, and Red Bull have been left without a
power supplier for 2016 after they also failed to agree terms with Ferrari or find a solution with Honda.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton still has to pinch himself to believe he is a three times Formula One world champion and a surreal afternoon in Mexico will give him further cause to question reality.
The Briton, who wrapped up his third title in Austin on Sunday, was serenaded by a Mariachi band, played table football in a wrestling ring with a masked fighter and was handed a beaded skull as a gift on Wednesday.
“Every day I am waking up and I’m like, ‘I can’t believe it. I’m a three times world champion,’” the Mercedes driver told reporters after an event organised by team sponsor Puma for employees.
“I don’t know when it’s going to kick in but I’m definitely enjoying it,” continued Hamilton, who earned his 10th victory of the season in Texas.
“When people tell me three, I have them repeat it because it sounds really cool.”
The afternoon’s activities gave him plenty more opportunities to think he was still dreaming.
He had arrived at the Arena Mexico, the venerable home of Lucha Libre wrestling and boxing venue for the 1968 Olympics, to be serenaded on stage to the strains of ‘Cielito Lindo’.
