Sens top Flames in SO

-

WASHINGTON, Oct 29, (AP): Phil Kessel netted the go-ahead goal off Evgeni Malkin’s pass less than 2 minutes after Beau Bennett tied it in the third period, and the Pittsburgh Penguins ended Washington’s five-game winning streak by beating the Capitals 3-1 on Wednesday night.

After a pair of scoreless periods and superb play by both goalies, Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov put the hosts ahead about 1 1/2 minutes into the third, when his wrist shot appeared to deflect off the left skate of Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi and past Marc-Andre Fleury.

All of 24 seconds later, it was tied thanks to Bennett, who missed the past five games with an injury. His initial shot was blocked by Braden Holtby, but Bennett put in the rebound. Soon after, Malkin sent the puck in front of the goal and through defenseman Karl Alzner’s legs to Kessel for his fourth goal.

Senator 5, Flames 4, SO

In Ottawa, Ontario, Mika Zibanejad scored the shootout winner to give Ottawa its first home win of the season.

Zack Smith, Bobby Ryan, Kyle Turris and Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored in regulation for the Senators, who snapped a four-game losing streak (0-2-2). Ottawa was also 0-2-2 at home. Craig Anderson made 34 saves through overtime.

Dougie Hamilton, Joe Colborne, Kris Russell and Sam Bennett scored for the Flames, who have now lost three straight (0-2-1). Jonas Hiller allowed four goals on 18 shots before leaving the game in the third with an injury. Joni Ortio stopped all five shots he faced in relief.

Predators 2, Sharks 1

In San Jose, Eric Nystrom scored early, Calle Jarnkrok scored late and Nashville beat San Jose.

Pekka Rinne stopped 20 of 21 shots for the win. He had lost four of his previous five games against the Sharks.

The Predators rebounded from an overtime loss against Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis and forward Brandon Prust will not travel on the upcoming twogame road trip, the team announced Wednesday.

Hamhuis did not play Tuesday night against the Montreal

Canadiens because of a lower-body injury. Prust has a left ankle injury he sustained in a collision with Canadiens forward Brian Flynn during the second period Tuesday.

St. Louis Blues defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk is “days away” from returning to the lineup, coach Ken Hitchcock said.

Shattenkirk has been out since Oct. 13 with a lower-body injury. He did not practice Wednesday and will not play Thursday night against the Anaheim Ducks.

Florida Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr, who leads the Panthers with six goals and 10 points, is day to day because of a lowerbody injury, the team announced.

Jagr was hurt during the first period of the Panthers’ 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night. Jagr, the oldest player in the NHL at 43, played just 2:30 in the game.

The Tampa Bay Lightning assigned goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy to the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League for conditioning.

Vasilevskiy, 21, appeared in 16 games with the Lightning last season, posting a record of 7-5-1 to go along with a 2.36 goals-against average and .918 save percentage.

The Chicago Blackhawks recalled defenseman Erik Gustafsson from the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League. Gustafsson, 23, has one assist and 10 penalty minutes in eight games with the IceHogs in his first professional season in North America.

The Nynashamn, Sweden, native signed with the Blackhawks as a free agent on April 30.
