KUWAIT CITY, Dec 18: Sabah AlAhmad Center for Giftedness and Creativity (SACGC) launched “sleep related diseases unit” for the inventor Dr AbdulMohsin Al-Turki at the Dasman Institute for Diabetes, reports Al-Qabas daily.
The ‘sleep related disease unit’ was launched after Dr AbdulMohsin AlTurki received the patent of invention for diagnosis and treatment of snoring and choking in sleep.
Dr Al-Turki who is the head of Faculty of Nose and Throat at Kuwait’s Institute for Medical Specialization explained that ‘choking’ is the interference of respiration by the compression or obstruction of the larynx or trachea due to various reasons.
He explained the institute will receive diabetes patients from various nationalities, but with priority to patients from Dasman Institute. He noted the unit will start with one room and develop it later; stressing, field study had been conducted in early 2015 in collaboration with students from the faculty of medicine at Kuwait University.
The study involved 600 respondents (employees and visitors to the ministries complex) of which 15 percent suffer from sleep related diseases, and the proportion corresponds with the global rate of sleep disorder, which is 4 percent.
He indicated results of the study will be published in the official magazine soon. He pointed to a solid link between choking while sleeping and type two diabetes and further scientific studies should be conducted in that regard.
He revealed total cooperation on concerned patents with the specialized scientific centers at Oxford and Harvard, among other specialized centers and the Sabah Al-Ahmad Center for Giftedness and Creativity. He reiterated “sleep lab” is currently scheduled for another patent of invention, which will be announced later.
