The Denver Broncos had already ruled injured quarterback Peyton Manning out of Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh, but the news that he could not practice on Friday casts further doubt on when he might return to NFL action.

The 10-3 Broncos are still on track for a playoff berth, two games clear of the surging Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West, but can ill afford another loss as they vie for a first-round bye with New England (11-2) and Cincinnati (10-3).

Back-up quarterback Brock Osweiler has so far proved an adequate replacement for Manning, going 3-1 in four starts, but the Broncos have not exactly been sizzling on offense, scoring an average of 19 and coming off a 15-12 loss to Oakland (6-7).

St Louis aldermen have agreed to spend $150 million to help finance a new riverfront football stadium as part of the effort to keep the Rams from moving.

Aldermen voted 17-10 to approve the measure Friday. The vote does not guarantee that owner Stan Kroenke will keep the team in St. Louis, but was considered vital toward the effort to build the new $1 billion stadium that could entice NFL owners against allowing the Rams to move.

Tom Brady missed Friday’s practice because of an undisclosed illness and was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans.

Even though Brady is officially questionable on the team’s injury report Friday, the Patriots expect him to make the start, according to multiple reports.

If Brady’s illness takes a turn for the worse, the Patriots would turn to Jimmy Garoppolo. Brady has not missed a game since the final week of the 2008 regular season, which was the last of 15 games he missed after tearing his ACL in the season opener.

Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen has been cleared to play and cornerback Charles Tillman will return to action as the team puts its unbeaten 13-0 mark on the line on Sunday against the New York Giants.

Olsen injured his left knee in last week’s 38-0 drubbing of the Atlanta Falcons and sat out a practice early in the week but was a full participant on Friday and was listed as probable.

Olsen, who has played in 139 consecutive games, has 65 receptions for 969 yards this season.

Tillman has missed the last four games due to a knee injury.

Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields was ruled out for Sunday’s game at the Oakland Raiders after he did not clear the concussion protocol, head coach Mike McCarthy said.

Shields suffered a concussion in the second quarter against the Dallas Cowboys last Sunday.
