LOS ANGELES :

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac alongside original stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher has scored the biggest four-day opening weekend of all time in the UK and Ireland. The film previously broke the record for the biggest opening day in the territory on Thursday.

J. J. Abrams’ movie took 25.3 million Euros ($37.7 million) in three days at the UK and Ireland box office, with Sunday’s projected 7.5 million Euros ($11.2 million) bringing the film’s cumulative weekend projection to 32.8 million Euros ($48.9 million), including previews. This breaks the record set by “Jurassic World” for the highest grossing four-day opening weekend.

The film has taken $238 million in the US and $279 million internationally bringing the weekend global box-office takings to $517 million worldwide.

Opening at midnight on Wednesday, the film took 9.6 million Euros ($14.3 million) on its opening day, setting a new UK and Ireland record. Midnight screenings alone accounted for 2.4 million Euros ($3.58) of the day’s box office, smashing all previous records. Tickets for the highly anticipated film went on sale in October and sold more than 200,000 tickets in 24 hours. A total of 2 million tickets were booked ahead of the release - breaking another record for advanced ticket bookings.

Yesterday’s 8.6 million Euros ($12.8 million) takings were the biggest Saturday figure of all time in the UK and Ireland, beating the two current leading three-day openers, “Skyfall” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2” at this stage in release.

After just three days in the market the film has overtaken the entire lifetime totals of the first “Hunger Games,” “Amazing Spider-Man 2,” “Prometheus,” “The Martian,” “Transformers” and “Fast & Furious 6.” (RTRS)
