Kuwaiti runners win gold, silver in Doha

Qatar top Asian Indoor Championsh­ips

DOHA, Feb 21, (Agencies): Kuwaiti runners Abdulaziz Al-Mendil and Yagoub Al-Yoha have won gold and silver medals in the 60 meters hurdles race in 7th Asian Indoor Athletics Championsh­ips in Doha.

The three -day sporting event kicked off on February 19 with a wide internatio­nal participat­ion of 450 men and women from 37 other countries.

Meanwhile, Qatari middle-distance runner Mohamad Algarni added a 3000m gold to his 1500m win on the final day of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championsh­ips on Sunday, as the host nation topped the medal table.

Algarni powered home in a championsh­ip record time of 7min 39.23secs, holding off the challenge of Bahrain’s Albert Rop, who finished one second back.

Algarni also won the double over the same distances two years ago at the last indoor championsh­ips.

It was one of three gold medals for Qatar on the last day of competitio­n, which meant the host nation finished with six golds, proof that its huge investment in sport over the last decade is starting to produce results.

Musaab Abdelrahma­n Bala won the 800m in another championsh­ip record time of 1:46.92 and the host country also triumphed in the 4x400 men’s relay.

China took two more gold on the final night to take five golds over the three days of competitio­n.

Liu Yang won the Shot Put, throwing a distance of 19.30m with his last attempt.

And Zhang Yaoguang won the Long Jump with a leap of 7.99m to hold off India’s Prem Kumar Kumaravel who leapt 7.92m.
