Fallon ‘remembers’ Shandling on show

CBS renews eleven series

-

LOS ANGELES, March 27, (RTRS): Jimmy Fallon paid tribute to Garry Shandling on Friday night’s edition of “The Tonight Show”, sharing his memories of the standup and calling him “one of the greatest comedians to ever live.”

Shandling died Thursday of a heart attack. His death was met with an outpouring of praise and condolences from fellow comedians and actors.

Fallon’s tribute consisted of the host’s candid musings about Shandling’s funniest bits; he spoke to his audience casually as though discussing a fallen peer among friends.

“He was just the best”, Fallon said. “I just love him. He was one of the greatest standup comedians ever. If you’re thinking about getting into standup comedy, or if you just like watching it, you can’t go through without seeing Garry Shandling.”

Fallon then shared a clip of Shandling’s first “Tonight Show” appearance with Johnny Carson in 1981.

The late-night host joined the Roots to sing his rendition of the theme song to “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show”, originally performed by Bill Lynch.

“This is the theme to Garry’s show/The theme to Garry’s show/Garry called me up and asked if I would write his theme song”, Fallon sang.

Fallon announced that his favorite clips of the comedian’s “Tonight Show” appearance would be compiled for viewing on the show’s website, TonightShow.com

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 pm on NBC.

In today’s news roundup, “The Walking Dead” teaser reveals Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan for the first time. Plus, “Supergirl” has plans to bring on Wonder Woman, and Shemar Moore exits “Criminal Minds.”

The Walking Dead:

Spoiler Alert: The below blurb on “The Walking Dead” contains spoilers from the comics, but not the show.

He is finally here. In an international teaser for “The Walking Dead”, which leaked on Friday, the first glimpse of Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s villainous Negan arrived.

Negan and his barbwire-covered baseball bat Lucille are set to debut during the 90-minute Season 6 finale on April 3. In anticipation of that grand entrance, the teaser video does not show the character’s face, but the words, “Hi. I’m Negan” are uttered.

In the original comics, Negan murders Glenn (Steven Yeun) with Lucille, but as the show tends to differ from the comics at times, there’s no word on Glenn’s future fate when Negan arrives in the finale.

Supergirl:

Wonder Woman will be making her way to “Supergirl” — that is, when the CBS series gets a Season 2 renewal.

Yesterday, following a press screening for “The Flash” and “Supergirl” crossover episode, Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg told reporters, including Variety, that they have plans for Lynda Carter to come onto the show.

“We had the perfect role for Lynda Carter. We couldn’t work out her schedule. Next year”, Berlanti said, referring to the show’s second season — which hasn’t been officially greenlit, though a renewal is expected. “We’re going to do it, we’ll just do it next year”, Kreisberg added.

Berlanti even revealed Carter’s future role: the female President of the United States.

Criminal Minds:

Longtime “Criminal Minds” star Shemar Moore exited the CBS procedural this week, after 11 seasons.

The actor posted many messages on social media, in anticipation of the big episode, and in an interview following his departure, Moore teased that him leaving the show may not be permanent.

“It’s not goodbye. Derek did not die”, Moore told E! News of his character, then going on to explain the reason for departing. “Yes, I am wanting to see what else is out there for me and what else I’m capable of in my career and also in my personal life. I’m looking for balance. I want to fall in love, get married, have kids, travel. I want to walk my dogs more.

In advance of unveiling its fall schedule at the upfronts in May, CBS Entertainment has announced renewals for eleven more primetime series — a list that includes all the usual suspects among ongoing shows except “Criminal Minds.” Decisions on first-year series will be announced in the coming weeks.

The series announced to return are “Blue Bloods”, “Elementary”, “Hawaii Five-0”, “Madam Secretary”, “Mom”, “NCIS: Los Angeles”, “NCIS: New Orleans”, “Scorpion”, “2 Broke Girls”, “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race.”

They join the previously renewed “The Big Bang Theory” and “NCIS”, the network’s top-rated programs. Also as previously announced, “Mike & Molly”, “Person of Interest” and “The Good Wife” are ending after their current seasons wrap this spring.
