Kuwait, Canadian officials discuss economic ties
KUWAIT CITY, April 2, (KUNA): Ministries and other government bodies and departments, totaling 47, will be using the Government Financial Management Information System (GFMIS) application as of Sunday, April 3, a senior Finance Ministry official said on Saturday.
The move crowns the outcome of the reengineering financial operations project, one of the leading in the region, Undersecretary Khalifa Hamada added in a press statement.
He said that the country’s financial systems have been restructured to keep pace with the world’s standard practices, in a bid to fulfil the needs of the government bodies.
The leading international Oracle company has been selected for enterprise resource planning (ERP), that will function as the official systems for managing the government finances.
The achievement is the outcome of hard work by the Finance Ministry staff, as well as the fruitful interaction and cooperation on the side of other government bodies, he said.
According to Hamada, the government financial management systems cover the budget systems, accounting, procurement, online group buying and managing government stockpiles.
These systems will provide all financial reports for preparing budgets, for the state and for each government entity. He stressed that they enjoy a high level of secrecy.
The ministry has made arrangements likely to secure success for the project through qualifying national cadres from the EPR Department to offer training on these systems, in addition to opening a customer service center.
Meanwhile, Kuwait’s Ambassador to Canada Abdulhameed Al-Failakawi said Friday that organizing a Kuwaiti-Canadian economic forum in Ottawa will bolster economic ties between the two countries.
Al-Failakawi made his remarks while meeting with Ottawa’s Mayor Jim Watson in the Canadian capital, Kuwaiti embassy said in a statement, received by KUNA Washington, DC.
Holding a Kuwaiti cultural week in Ottawa this fall will also boost the two nations’ cultural relations as well, he added.
Meanwhile, the two sides expressed satisfaction towards the current Kuwaiti-Canadian relations, and reiterated aspiration to improve them in different prospects.
For his part, Watson called on all diplomatic missions in Canada, including Kuwait, to join the country’s Sesquicentennial Anniversary of Confederation celebrations, slated for 2017, by holding exhibitions, symposiums, and shows that reflect their cultures.
Al-Failakawi welcomed Watson’s call and reiterated Kuwait’s keenness in participating effectively in such national festivals.
