Cain ends drought as Giants top Cubs

SAN FRANCISCO, May 22, (AP): Matt Cain pitched six strong innings and helped himself with his bat, Buster Posey added a two-run homer and the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3 on Saturday night.

Cain (1-5) got his first victory since July 22, 2015, against San Diego, snapping a streak of 15 consecutiv­e winless starts. Cain also had a two-run double in the second inning.

The Giants won for the ninth time in 10 games and the Cubs fell to 2-3 on their nine-game road trip.

Jon Lester (4-3) allowed five runs on six hits and three walks in his worst outing of the season.

In San Diego, Yangervis Solarte, fresh off the disabled list, drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the 11th inning to give the San Diego Padres their second straight walkoff victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Solarte drew four straight balls from Chin-Hui Tsao (0-1) to bring in Wil Myers for the winning run. Solarte was activated earlier Saturday after being out since April 10 with a hamstring injury.

Melvin Upton Jr came close to hitting a winning, two-run homer for the second night in a row in the 11th, but Trayce Thompson made a catch at the wall for the second out. Upton’s two-run homer in the ninth inning Friday night gave the Padres a 7-6 win.

In Miami, Jose Fernandez pitched six innings and then led the dugout celebratio­n as Miami made him a winner again at Marlins Park by beating Washington.
