‘Spies’ arrested in Rome:

-

A senior Portuguese intelligence officer has been arrested in Rome along with a Russian at the request of Lisbon which suspects them of spying, the Lusa news agency reported Monday.

Portugal’s state prosecutor said the arrest of the officer and “a foreigner linked to an intelligence agency” followed a probe “into suspicions concerning the transmission of information in exchange for money”.

Lusa said the Portuguese national was a senior member of the SIS intelligence agency. The Russian was also an intelligence agent, it said.

A source close to the case said the secrets allegedly passed on concerned the European Union and NATO, of which Portugal is a member. (AFP)
