Kuwait: need to raise awareness
‘Extremism, terror’
VIENNA, May 25, (KUNA): Kuwait stressed on the importance of raising awareness against terrorism and radical thinking by educating the public and intensifying campaigns that call for tolerance and acceptance of others, a Ministry of Justice official said on Wednesday.
This remark was made by Assistant Undersecretary for Legal Affairs at Ministry of Justice Zakariya AlAnsari at the 25th session for the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) in Vienna.
Al-Ansari said that Kuwait strongly condemns terrorism of all its forms which violates all principles of human rights and values. He added that Kuwait is taking sincere measures against countering this phenomenon by strengthening regional and international cooperation.
Locally, Kuwait has adopted some protective measures such as: setting up a national committee to counter money laundry and terrorism funding, establishing a monetary investigation unit to protect public funding and creating a peace rehabilitation center to correct deviant ways of thinking within religious and psychological methods.
He said that the CCPCJ exerted efforts to promote religious moderation, stating that Kuwait has also set up a full scale strategic plan to promote religion moderation through the involvement of private sector, civil communities and governmental specialized bodies. The plan focuses on teaching religious values, encouraging social responsibility, developing e-media means to promote moderation, and tightening security methods.
Meanwhile, Egypt called for concerted efforts by Arab media to counter the phenomena of terrorism, violence and extremism that hinder development and threaten stability in several countries of the region.
Safaa Hegazy, head of the Egyptian Radio and Television Union, made the statement on Monday in a speech during the meeting of the Executive Council of Arab Information Ministers at the Arab League headquarters.
Hegazy, who is also head of the Executive Council, said security solutions, despite their importance, are not enough to combat terrorism, stressing that media plays a key role in countering this scourge.
She stressed the importance of the meeting which is held amid a critical phase and major challenges, mainly terrorism and extremism, facing many countries in the region.
Conferees will discuss many topics, including a proposal by the council’s technical secretariat on “media and the agenda of sustainable development” to enhance media role in achieving the development process.
Also among the meeting’s agenda are to deal with recommendations pertaining to the Palestinian cause to rally support of the international public opinion, and to combat arbitrary measures and policies of the Israeli occupation forces against Palestinians.
