The report said the department and its secretaries were “slow to recognize and to manage effectively the legal requirements and cybersecurity risks associated with electronic data communications, particularly as those risks pertain to its most senior leadership.” (AP) “will closely track daily screening operations, shifting officers, canine resources, the National Deployment Force and other resources to meet mission demands in advance of predicted passenger volume.”

TSA plans to add 768 new screeners by mid-June.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, who oversees TSA and has addressed the security line delays in recent weeks, told National Public Radio Tuesday that TSA officers are being moved to staff checkpoints at the busiest airports at the busiest times. But that is a stopgap measure. (AP) The global human rights group The Elders says that former president Jimmy Carter is stepping away from his “front-line role” as a member of the organization.

The Elders said in a statement Wednesday that Carter will remain affiliated with the group as an honorary — or emeritus — Elder starting June 1. The statement gave no specific reason for the change in Carter’s status.

The 91-year-old former president announced in August that he had skin cancer that had spread to his brain. At the time, he said he would begin receiving a cancer-fighting drug. In March, Carter said that he had stopped treatment after several scans found no cancer in his body.

Founded in 2007, The Elders are an independent group of leaders that work for peace and human rights. (AP)

Retrial for Patz killer:

A retrial for a New Jersey man accused of killing 6-yearold Etan Patz (AY’-tahn payts) in 1979 will begin in New York City after Labor Day.

The New York Times reports jury selection is expected to start Sept. 6 or 7 in the trial of Maple Shade resident Pedro Hernandez.

Etan vanished on his way to school in New York City. He became one of the first missing children pictured on milk cartons. Etan was declared dead in 2001.

The defense says Hernandez has low intelligence and falsely confessed because of a personality disorder. His May 2015 trial ended in a hung jury.

Supreme Court Justice Maxwell Wiley set the new trial schedule Tuesday. He’s expected to rule on evidence in the case by July 11. (AP)
