EPA preps time schedule to shut down MPW’s waterways along Kuwait bay

3,735 marriages registered in Q1 of 2016; divorce cases reach 48.5 pc: statistics

KUWAIT CITY, May 30: Environment Public Authority (EPA) has prepared a time schedule to shut down Ministry of Public Works’ waterways along Kuwait bay because they pollute the sea with a great amount of sewage and untreated water, and other challenges, says Al Qabas daily. High ranking sources said the closure of Al-Ghazali waterway will be effective by the end of June, as it contributes to sea pollution with sewage from Jleeb Al Shuyoukh exceeding 100,000 liters daily.

He added the step, according to a study, will lead to the closing of Al Ghazali Road and Fourth Ring Road due to accumulation of sewage water that will flood the roads. He called on the Ministry to speed up implementation of observations and recommendations issued by EPA without hesitating on applying the law against violators, especially factories, residential units and extension of drainage network in overcrowded and congested areas.

Statistics released by the Accounting and Research Department in the Ministry of Justice for the first quarter of 2016 showed that 3,735 marriages were registered within this period while the divorce cases reached 1,815 or 48.5 percent, but the divorce cases are not limited to those who got married in the first quarter of this year, reports Al-Qabas daily. The statistics also revealed that the cases of conditioned divorce totaled 298. Hawally Governorate registered the highest number of divorce cases, recording 44 marriages compared to 188 divorce cases. Mubarak Al-Kabeer came in second with 113 marriages compared to 171 divorce cases, Ahmadi is third with 267 marriages and 247 divorce cases, followed by Jahra which recorded the lowest rate of divorce with 390 marriages compared to 148 divorce cases. The report added that 27 Kuwaitis got married outside the country; while 3,323 pre-marriage checkups were conducted and 11 of them were found to be ‘unsafe’.
