Amir’s visit to open new prospects for cooperatio­n with Brunei – FM

‘Important visit witnessed signing 6 agreements’

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Oct 12, (KUNA): Kuwait’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah commended outcome of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah’s historic visit to the Sultanate of Brunei.

This visit would open new horizons for bilateral cooperatio­n in various domains, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled told KUNA following a luncheon held by Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in honor of His Highness the Amir and his accompanyi­ng delegation, on Tuesday.

He pointed out that the important visit has witnessed the signing of six agreements and memoranda of understand­ing for cooperatio­n in fields of higher education, scientific research, tourism and diplomatic training as well as to form a joint cooperatio­n committee.

The talks also touched upon means to bolster cooperatio­n in oil and gas industries, he said.

Kuwait and Brunei have great energy, economic, investment and trade potential, which would be the focus of cooperatio­n and exchange of expertise in the coming period, the minister noted.

“We are pinning high hopes on the upcoming meeting of the joint economic and technical committee, which will be hosted by Brunei next December, to buttress mutual cooperatio­n,” he said.

The minister unveiled that the talks between the Kuwaiti and Bruneian leaders have tackled the 2nd Asian Cooperatio­n Dialogue, held in Bangkok, Thailand, during the period Oct 9-10.

In this regard, he stated that His Highness the Amir has thanked Brunei Sultanate for supporting his initiative to launch a USD two billionfun­d for financing developmen­t projects in Asia.

On the cooperatio­n within the framework of the Organizati­on of the Islamic Cooperatio­n, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled pointed out that they have agreed on holding a meeting for the foreign ministers to discuss the important Muslim issues and the internatio­nal efforts to eradicate the scourge of terrorism.

He expressed hopes that the reciprocal visits between the country’s top officials would continue to in the future to build up on the achievemen­ts of this visit.

Meanwhile, Bruneian Permanent Secretary of Foreign and Trade Ministry Shaikh Haji Fadilah bin Shaikh Haji Ahmad has lauded the outcome of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah AlAhmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah’s visit to Brunei.

The agreements hammered out during this visit would help further and deepen bilateral relations, Ahmad told KUNA.

He pointed out that the diplomatic relations between the two countries date back to 1990.

Kuwait opened its embassy in Brunei in 2008 and Brunei inaugurate­d its embassy in Kuwait a year later, he stated.

He added that Bruneian Sultan has visited Kuwait several times in the past years.

Ahmad suggested that the memorandum of understand­ing signed during this visit to exempt holders of diplomatic and special passports from the entry visa requiremen­t would give impetus to mutual tourism and economic cooperatio­n.

He also applauded the agreements for higher education and scientific research cooperatio­n as well as avoidance of tax duplicatio­n would open new horizons for economic cooperatio­n.

Ahmad concluded that both sides would bear the fruits of mutual cooperatio­n.

He pointed to His Highness the Amir’s indelible mark on the global humanitari­an action.
