‘Intefadah’ site owner gets death threats
AFC seats runners get FIFA nod
KUWAIT CITY, March 25: Palestine-born American activist and owner of ‘Intefadah’ website, Ali Abu Ne’mah, has been receiving death threats after a lecture he delivered at the American University of Kuwait few days ago on ‘Racial Discrimination in Israel’, reports Al-Qabas daily.
This is not the first time Abu Ne’mah is receiving death threats since the beginning of his activism 15 years ago. He visited Kuwait for the first time based on invitation from the university and BDS Boycott Movement- Kuwait Chapter to mark the annual World anti-Apartheid Week.
He spoke about hidden and open boycott that successfully led to the suspension of operation in Israel by four international companies based on its support and connection with occupation. He also spoke about the Trump experience in the new US Administration and contradictory action of the judges and civil society organizations over his measures against minority groups and immigrants, in addition to his one-state proposal in an attempt to combine Palestinians and Israelis after the idea of a two-state system was aborted.
Abu Ne’mah also touched on the role played by Palestinians in America and the website he has established and managing since 2001.
Runners get FIFA nod: Candidates vying for the four available Asian Football Confederation (AFC) seats on the FIFA council have been cleared to stand for election by the world governing body, the AFC said on Friday according to the Al-Anba daily.
The four successful candidates during the Bahrain AFC Congress in May to represent Asia along with the Bahraini vice-president Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the head of the AFC, and members from Japan and Malaysia. The four spots include one reserved for women.
Australian Moya Dodd, formerly a co-opted member of the old FIFA Executive Committee, will take on Mahfuza Ahkter of Bangladesh, Han Un-gyong of North Korea and Susan R. A. Shalabi of Palestine.
The Chinese Football Association General Secretary Zhang Jian, South Korea’s Mong Gyu Chung, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah of Kuwait and Mariano V. Araneta Jr of Philippines will contest for the other three spots.
The Olympic Council of Asia President Sheikh Ahmad, who heads the Association of National Olympic committees and is an influential International Olympic Committee (IOC) member, has a FIFA Council seat currently. The term ends in May. The FIFA Council replaced the largely discredited Executive Committee as FIFA’s decision-making body under reforms instituted in the wake of the 2015 corruption scandal in soccer’s world governing body.
