Majority of members refuse to lift immunity of 2 MPs

KUWAIT CITY, March 27: MP Dr Waleed Al-Tabtabaei reiterated his intention to grill HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak upon failure to amend citizenship law, and to reduce fuel prices with water and electricity tariffs, reports Al-Rai daily.

Al-Tabtabaei noted the government has made numerous promises to amend citizenship law but nothing has happened until now, noting they are still waiting for government’s response after it requested the issue to be postponed for two weeks.

He stressed the proposed amendment to citizenship law is very simple, indicating they only require the Judiciary to be empowered to control the withdrawal and granting of citizenship. He affirmed support to punishing those who forge documents to obtain citizenship illegally but refused the idea of using citizenship issue as a tool to challenge the loyalty of citizens.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Health Committee approved modification to Law No. 11/2012 concerning social aid, which reduces the age of women who are entitled to social aid from 55 to 45 years old.

Parliamentary sources said the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor is not convinced about the amendment, which government believes, will affect the ministry budget.

MP Saleh Ashour stated the decision of specifying exceptional pension for non-commissioned officers and other personnel has been postponed until next Sunday’s session. He noted the Ministry of Finance will represent government at the session.

The majority of the Legislative Committee members refused the decision to lift immunity of MPs Jama’an Al-Harbash and Nayef Al-Medras based on the lawsuit filed in relation to the repetition of former MP Musallam Al-Barrak’s speech, while the committee upheld its decision on lifting the immunity of MP Khaled AlShatti.

The Legislative Committee also approved the amendment to detention law empowering the Ministry of Interior to remand suspects for 48 hours, while Public Prosecution has the right to remand suspects for 10 days.

MP Khalil Al-Saleh stressed the need for expatriates visiting the country to pay health insurance and fees for other medical services as a matter of urgency. Above: Some photos from the signing of cooperation agreement between Kuwait University and EQUATE
