‘College of Science exerts efforts to cut rate of withdrawals’

KUWAIT CITY, April 4, (KUNA): Kuwait University seeks to interact with academic establishments of other countries in implementation of one of its key objectives, says the KU president.

The university administration makes sure that students are regularly involved in scientific and cultural occasions in and outside Kuwait, said Dr Hussein Al-Ansari, in a statement after inaugurating “peoples’ cultural forum,” organized by the KU.

Groups from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Palestine, Tunisia and Algeria are taking part in the activity, displaying traditional dresses, books and handicrafts.

Rami Tahboub, the Palestinian Ambassador, boasted of his country’s participation noting that the pavilion displays Al-Quds encyclopedia, 30,000 editions of which have been printed by the Kuwaiti Ministry of Information.

Photos by the renowned Kuwaiti photographer Hamed Al-Amiri are exhibited at the forum. Some of them depict ancient and traditional professions such as pearl diving.

Kuwaiti artist Hussein Al-Bazzaz displays prototypes of old Kuwaiti dhows and visitors are served Kuwaiti cuisines.

Meanwhile, assistant Dean for Students Affairs at College of Science Dr Adeeba Al-Hirban highlighted the efforts being exerted by the college to reduce the rate of withdrawals from the college and rate of transfers to other colleges during the current period, especially with the increasing number of students who enrolled undeservingly into the college, reports Al-Qabas daily.

In her statement, Dr Al-Hirban affirmed that the college and its academic sections encourage students to continue classes until they complete their academic studies. This is done through various methods such as orientation meetings, encouragement campaigns and various workshops.

She expressed her surprise over the fact that some students trans-

ferred to other colleges from the College of Science by claiming that their move is based on the academic difficulty they faced in the college. However, in reality, the colleges that they transferred to are actually more difficult compared to the College of Science.

Dr Al-Hirban affirmed that any student can pass the courses of the Science College provided they attend the lectures, carry out revision and prepare for exams.

She stressed that, “The demand for graduates from various sections

of the College of Science is high in the labor market in both public and private sectors”.

Dr Al-Hirban explained that the Deanship of Student Affairs at the college opens its doors to students and their parents to solve any problems related to the students, the academic performance, points or courses or even examinations. The dean is ready to listen, discuss and work according to the university’s rules and regulations.

She emphasized the fact that it is not allowed for students to be

accompanied with their parents in the lecturers’ offices for discussing with them about academic related issues, adding that the college prohibits this in order to avoid any problems related to pressure.

Dr Al-Hirban affirmed that every student has the right to go to his/ her lecturer on individual basis to discuss his/her academic related issues without seeking the company of others, especially since it is the natural right for students of this level who can articulate their issues without any difficulty.
