Mubarakiya sit-in delayed

KUWAIT CITY, April 4: In the latest developmen­t on the shop owners’ crisis at Mubarakiya Market, their proposed strike due for tomorrow has been cancelled after a meeting of the delegation from the union of shop owners with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Anas Al-Saleh, reports AlAnba daily.

The daily quoting sources said they agreed to continue paying the old rent through the court until the Ministry of Finance completes its study on the contracts with companies implementi­ng the project.

“I hope and wish that a country like Kuwait can play a more prominent role in the political mediation,” said the EU foreign policy chief.

Mogherini said she will meet Kuwaiti First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah either today or tomorrow to discuss not only the humanitari­an issue but also the political solution to the Syrian conflict.

She stressed that all the countries in the region have a role to play in the political side as they have a direct interest to see that the conflict is not further protracted.

“In the moment when Inshallah soon we will come to the end of the conflict we have to see that the situation is managed in a reasonable manner,” she said.

“I have a clear sense of the fact that Europeans and the Gulf countries share a sense of urgency and seriousnes­s of the situation (in Syria) and that it could only be solved politicall­y,” she added.

The European Union, Germany, Kuwait, Norway, Qatar, the United Kingdom and the United Nations will co-chair the Brussels Conference titled “Supporting the future of Syria and the region,” on Wednesday.

Mogherini said that representa­tives from 70 delegation­s, including from the EU and the region but also the wider internatio­nal community, the United Nations, major donors and civil society, humanitari­an and developmen­t organisati­ons, will attend the meeting.

The conference will also assess where the internatio­nal community stands collective­ly in fulfilling commitment­s made at the London Conference in February 2016 and agree on additional efforts needed to meet the needs of those affected by the crisis. She said pledges for Syria will be announced tomorrow and hoped that the pledges made last year and this year for Syria will be maintained.

Mogherini said discussion­s in tomorrow’s conference will also focus on how the internatio­nal community can support a lasting political resolution to the Syrian conflict through an inclusive and Syrian-led political transition process based on the relevant Security Council resolution­s.
