Study reveals university students’ interest in academic research ‘average’
Dr Al-Kandari highlights existence of differences in samples responses
KUWAIT CITY, April 13: A recent academic study prepared by a lecturer of educational management and planning at College of Education in Kuwait University Dr Nabila Al-Kandari revealed that university students’ interest in academic research in terms of reading and accessing books, and their keenness to learn its preparatory steps is average, reports Al-Qabas daily.
She explained that the study involved 600 students from the university’s various colleges. Its objective was to know their opinions concerning their experience in preparing academic researches. The performance level of students for academic research writing is average in terms of their ability to organize thoughts, academic research contents and result analyses. The response was high concerning how to prepare academic researches and the role of the lecturers in developing their skills in that regard. However, the response was low concerning the ability of the students to write researches in English language. Response was high over dependence on external libraries and the Internet.
Dr Al-Kandari highlighted the existence of differences in the responses of individual samples that focused on the academic research interest in accordance to variable pattern in favor of the students. There was also variation in the response of the fourth year students, as well as in the use of the university’s library and academic research by excellent achievers, who seem keener to use the university’s library.
She stressed the importance of the university to adopt keen interest in teaching the methodology of academic research with practical application, and help students understand how the actual implementation of the academic research on the field.
In addition to increasing the students’ awareness on the importance of self-reliance in conducting research without depending on external libraries, Dr Al-Kandari stressed the need for allocation of financial stipend for students participating in preparation of academic researches, and activation of the role of lecturers in encouraging students to read academic researches.
