‘Law to ban smoking in public places produced great results’

KUWAIT CITY, May 23: Secretary General of Kuwait Environment Protection Society (KEPS) Jenan Bahzad says the first environmental law that was implemented, which was the law to ban smoking in closed and semiclosed public spaces, produced amazing results, especially since it created ideal atmosphere for families and those who frequent markets and commercial complexes, reports Al-Nahar daily.
In a press statement, she revealed that article No. 56 of the environment law No. 42/2014 and its amendments stipulated the smoking ban in closed and semi-closed public spaces except at designated areas allocated for smoking in accordance to the rules and regulations stipulated by the executive regulations of the law.
Bahzad indicated that the article also stipulates the ban of marketing or advertising cigarettes, tobacco and its products, affirming that the ban also includes e-cigarettes, sheesha, e-sheesha and any other items or equipment used for similar purpose.
She revealed that public smoking was the focus of Kuwait Environment Protection Society’s questionnaire for the month of April, and a high number of people participated in it through social media.
Bahzad explained that the results of the questionnaire came with several facts and surprises. A total of ten questions were asked by the society to the respondents. A large number of these respondents stressed the need for a proposal to ban teachers from smoking in schools.
Meanwhile, Kuwait Flour Mills and Bakeries Company has opened a branch in the building of Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) in Rabya area for disbursing fodder feeds, following the closure of its branch in Shuwaikh area, reports Al-Rai daily. CEO of Kuwait Flour Mills and Bakeries Company Mutlaq Al-Zayed said this step comes within the framework of facilitating procedures for distributing fodder to breeders after the new branch was opened in Rabya on Sunday.
