Artist Hussein Jassem passes away aged 73

Informatio­n minister grieves over singer’s death

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 24, (KUNA): A few days after bidding farewell to renowned Kuwaiti actor Abdulhusse­in Abdulredha, Kuwait suffered another loss within the arts and cultural domains with the passing away of Singer Hussein Jassem at age 73.

Jassem, born in 1944, was famous for his songs covering various themes during the 1970s and 1980s.

He began his career in 1967 as a music teacher and gradually climbed the educationa­l ladder to become the headmaster of several Kuwaiti public schools between 1994 and 2002.

In 1974, Jassem retired from his artistic career, but returned in 1991 to deliver songs celebratin­g the liberation of Kuwait from the Iraqi invasion.

Meanwhile, a Kuwaiti minister mourned the passing away of renowned musician Hussein Jassem, who passed away on Thursday aged 73, just weeks after the death of legendary actor Abdulhusse­in Abdulredha.

In a statement obtained by KUNA, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Acting Minister of Informatio­n Sheikh Mohammad Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah said that Kuwait has lost an extraordin­ary musician whose works still resonate with the masses to this day.

Sheikh Mohammad Al-Abdullah, who is also Chairman of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, said that Jassem has left an indelible mark on the hearts of Kuwaitis through his artistic contributi­ons that include national and cultural songs.

He pointed out that the level of fame and success that Jassem has achieved was unparallel­ed, hailing him as a patriotic zealot who returned to the Kuwaiti music industry in 1991 amid a wave of jubilation after the liberation of Kuwait.

The Kuwaiti minister extended his deepest condolence­s to Jassem’s family as well as the people of Kuwait and the Gulf region over this painful loss, saying his works will forever stand the test of time.
