Kuwaiti nominee Dr Al-Harbi elected ALECSO’s Dir-Gen
‘New position part of Kuwait’s cultural efforts’
KUWAIT CITY, Sept 30, (KUNA): Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) on Thursday elected the State of Kuwait nominee Dr Saud Al-Harbi as ALECSO’s director general.
Dr Al-Harbi won 15 votes out of 21, succeeding his compatriot, the late Dr Abdullah Al-Muhareb, in voting held on sidelines of ALECSO’s extraordinary session. Al-Muhareb passed away in May.
Al-Harbi told KUNA, after declaring the results, that his winning of the post came to crown the State of Kuwait role at various levels.
He pledged to do his best to boost education and culture in the Arab countries, disclosed his intention to work out programs to help in drying up resources of terrorism, extremist thoughts and creating a new Arab culture free of extremism.
Earlier today, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas honored Al-Muhareb with the Order of Culture, Science, and Arts for his significant role in bolstering Arab and Palestinian culture, in addition to his supportive stands toward the Palestinian cause.
PLO Executive Committee member Mahmoud Ismail, on behalf of Abbas, decorated the late chief’s brother Khaled Al-Muhareb with the Order.
The honoring ceremony was held in Kuwait on sidelines of the irregular session. The Tunisian-based ALECSO, established in July of 1970, has some 22-member countries who work together to better education and culture in the Arab region.
Meanwhile, newly-elected Kuwaiti director general of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) said the new position represents Kuwait’s educational and cultural efforts in the region.
Kuwait won 16 votes out of 21 in the first round, Undersecretary for research and curriculums at the Ministry of Education and ALECSO’s Director General Saud Al-Harbi said in a press statement Saturday.
During his discussions with other Arab officials, Al-Harbi noted that they had all praised the wise Kuwaiti leadership in dealing with conflicts and tensions in the Arab world.
Al-Harbi added that he is eager to resolve different issues facing ALECSO and spread awareness on the importance of Arab identity among youth.
