Bid to naturalize 4,000 bedoun hits new wall

‘Deport street brawlers’

-

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 3: The proposal by the Interior and Defense Committee of the National Assembly to naturalize not more than 4,000 bedoun during 2017 cannot get the government approval, reports Al-Rai daily quoting parliamentary sources.

The sources said it is difficult for the government to approve because of the wording of the report which proposes to naturalize ‘not less than 4,000’ and wants to amend the wording to ‘no more than 2,000’.

However, this is subject to the conditions laid down by the government such as they should be siblings of Kuwaiti mothers, military men who took part in the wars, who have files at the Supreme Committee and the sons and daughters of martyrs, and those who are registered in the 1965 census provided their security records are clear.

The sources added the government has made these remarks more than once during meetings with the Committee and unless the wording is amended, the law cannot be passed in the current year, since lack of flexibility will not serve the purpose.

MP Ahmad Al-Fadhl said he is against naturalization and he with other MPs has submitted a complete solution to the issue of naturalization by replacing it with something else, that is to say the blue card to be given to non-Kuwaiti husband of a Kuwaiti woman, non-Kuwaiti wife of a Kuwaiti husband and siblings of a Kuwaiti mother.

He added this card has advantages because it allows self-sponsorship, run business and buy property, but without some of the privileges granted to Kuwaitis such as the right to vote, financial assistance and others.

Security authorities recently issued strict instructions to refer any person involved in a quarrel, whether it appeared on social media or not, to the concerned security unit for immediate deportation, reports Al-Shahed daily.

The decision was taken in view of the prevalence of public brawls — a phenomenon which could bring about destabilization of security and panic among people.

Security sources affirmed there will be no delay in the implementation of the new instruction, indicating some officers do not apply the law because of ‘wasta’ (influence) and they will be held accountable.

Sources said the Control and Inspection Department in the Interior Ministry will take action against any officer who does not perform his duty and he will be subjected to punishment if proven that he did not implement the law.

“Public brawls among expatriates increased recently. This serious security issue will be solved only by taking decisive measures, as the case with those driving without a license. Driving without a license incidents stopped when expatriates realized that security units are serious in enforcing the law,” sources explained.
