KARBALA, Iraq, April 21, (KUNA): Kuwait Ambassador to Iraq Salem Al-Zamanan said Friday his country was the first aid donor to reach out to Baghdad in order to meet the commitment it made during the International Conference for Reconstruction of Iraq.
After conference, hosted by Kuwait on Feb 12-14, a delegation from Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) visited Baghdad for this purpose, he told reporters.
Ambassador AlZamanan made the comments at a joint press conference with Governor of Karbala Aqil Al-Treihi following their meeting here.
He noted that Kuwait acted on its own initiative to organize the international conference and ensure the largest possible participation by the aid donors and allies of Iraq.
On his talks with Al-Treihi, Ambassador Al-Zamanan said they discussed the Kuwaiti investments in Karbala governorate, to the south of Baghdad, which boasts of highly promising investment opportunities. He thanked the local government of Karbala for its efforts to facilitate the stay of Kuwaiti visitors to the religious shrines of Karbala.
On his part, the Iraqi official lauded the as positive and candid the bilateral relations with Kuwait in all fields.
He thanked Kuwait for the humanitarian support and the security assistance it offered to Iraqi over the last years.
Al-Treihi added that the talks with Ambassador Al-Zamanan reviewed the implementation of the outcomes of the reconstruction conference and ways to promote cooperation in the economic, investment, cultural and sports fields.
Deputy Representative of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations congratulated Liberia on the completion of the 14year long mandate of the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) on March 30.
Addressing a UN Security Council session on the situation in the West African nation on Friday, Bader Abdullah Al-Manikh expressed hope that the UN peacekeeping missions in other parts of the world would come to a successful end as is the case in Liberia.
He lauded the UNMIL as an example to be followed by other missions in involving all local, regional and international players in the stabilization effort and rebuilding a capable country.
Al-Manikh thanked the contributions made by the United Nations, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), African Union, European Union and other partners to consolidate peace and stability in the country.
Following the completion of the mandate of the mission, the UN Security Council announced earlier today that the UNMIL would remain an important partner for the West African nation in the future.
By the terms of presidential statement S/PRST/2018/8 - presented by Gustavo Meza Cuadra (Peru), Council President for April - the Council commended the achievements and progress made by the people and Government of Liberia since UNMIL had been initially deployed in 2003.
Those included significant improvements in social cohesion, the overall security situation, progress on respect for human rights and the preparation and execution of legislative and presidential elections.
It also expressed appreciation to UNMIL personnel, especially those who gave their lives in its service, and commended their steadfastness during such particularly challenging periods as the 2014 Ebola virus outbreak.
