ITU chief thanks Kuwait for hiking financial contribution
Kuwait’s strategy lauded
GENEVA, April 21, (KUNA): The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) General Director, Zhao Houlin, has expressed admiration for Kuwait’s substantial increase of financial contribution to the union.
Addressing the ITU board session, on Friday, Zhao expressed gratitude to Chairman of Kuwait’s Communications and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA) Salem Al-Uthaina for his role in increasing the Kuwaiti financial allocations for the union from “one to three points and then to five points within a short period of time.” Zhao did not specify Kuwait’s allotments for the international federation.
He lauded Kuwait’s strategy to link up GCC countries and Europe with a network of top-quality cables.
The union, Zhao said, supports the State of Kuwait initiative to transform itself into a communication and information center in the Gulf region and will offer any technical support required to ensure success of this ambitious project.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Jamal AlGhnaim, the State of Kuwait Representative to the United Nations and International Organizations, told KUNA that Zhao received Al-Uthaina at his office to discuss cooperation between Kuwait and the union.
In Thursday’s session, Al-Uthaina shed light on the mega project, designed to link up Kuwait with Iraq, Turkey and ultimately Europe.
Kuwait has been a member of the union since 1959 and won membership in its board in 1982.
