Kuwait’s general directorate of elections announcing the end of candidancy registration for 2018 Municipal Council elecitions. GENEVA, April 21, (KUNA): Kuwait Chairman of the Communications and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA) Salem Al-Athaina reviewed on Thursday the country’s launching of procedures of a regional path project of internet communications as a strategic track of the current one.

In a speech before the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Al-Athaina said the regional project seeking to highlight the Kuwaiti role in technology of transferring information and data will be a link among Kuwait, Iraq, Turkey and Europe.

The project is also part of Kuwait’s interest in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector, he said.

Since its establishment in 2014, the CITRA has taken upon itself the responsibility of improving and developing ICT regulatory environment.

He noted that this interest was clear through the issuance of regulations, decisions and guidelines, and the conclusion of agreements as well as the adoption of projects that materialize the Kuwait 2035 Vision on transforming the country into a financial and commercial hub.

He said the authority has already launched its vision on creating a competitive regulatory environment aiming to improve ICT that was monitored in a report by the World Economic Forum on Kuwait’s remarkable development in the index of the readiness of the telecommunications network.

He explained that the authority also launched Kuwait’s national cybersecurity strategy project, out of the country’s belief in providing distinguished and sophisticated services through fast and safe telecommunications networks.

This also comes in line with the government’s awareness of electronic challenges and threats facing countries, he said.

Al-Athaina referred that the authority is keen on highlighting Kuwait’s status and role on the world’s map in ICT.

He praised efforts exerted by the ITU to assist all Member States, mainly developing and least developed countries, to help them benefit from all developments of ICT. He pointed out that Kuwait affirms its full and unequivocal support for all activities implemented by the ITU, stressing that it will increase its contributions in this regard.

For his part, Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and International Organizations in Geneva Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghunaim told KUNA that relations between Kuwait and the ITU are of great importance.
