Kuwait reaffirms backing to Arab water co-op
KUWAIT CITY, April 22, (KUNA): States’ progress is measured by services for citizens of special needs, Minister of Social Affairs and Labor and Minister of State for Economic Affairs Dr Hind Al-Sabeeh said on Sunday.
Aware of the necessity devote attention this segment of the society, Kuwait has worked and succeeded in placing itself among nations with secured services for citizens of special challenges, she indicated, addressing opening ceremony for the first forum by the Kuwaiti Society for the Deaf, held at Kuwait University.
Citizens of special needs are furnished with diverse social, psychological and health support in Kuwait, the minister said, assuring attendees that she has been doing her best to enable these nationals be employed. Kuwaiti laws do not discriminate between this segment and the other citizens, noted Dr Humoud Al-Gashaan, dean of the Sociology Faculty.
He called for cooperation with Dr Amthal Al-Huwailah, the society chairperson, in her efforts to help them overcome difficulties in social integration and interaction.
The society has organized sign language courses at the KU and produced special dictionaries for this segment.
The State of Kuwait has always been eager to promote and consolidate water cooperation among Arab, mainly Gulf, countries, a senior Kuwaiti official said on Sunday.
There are serious steps on the part of Gulf countries to launch water connectivity; including relevant regulatory resolutions, Undersecretary of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity and Water Mohammad Bushehri told a news conference to announce the Third Arab Water Conference due in Kuwait on May 2-3.
“We are now in the process of launching the first stage of water connectivity; chiefly on the bilateral basis,” he added.
Inter-Gulf water linkage is primarily meant to diversify water sources, involving Red Sea water, given that Gulf countries often hinge upon Arabian Gulf water desalination, he remarked.
The conference will draw delegations from 22 Arab countries, together with nine UN agencies.
The conferees are expected to consider 44 scientific working papers and attend nine sessions that focus on, inter alia, water, climate, food and energy.
