KUWAIT CITY, April 22: The Ministry of Health has denied reports about the existence of medical waste being stored and destroyed in an unsafe manner at the Amiri Hospital, reports Al-Rai daily.

A statement issued by the ministry said what was photograph­ed and shown as medical waste is in fact waste from office, such as plastics, and not containers contaminat­ed with the blood of the patients or polluted liquids (blue bags) which are always placed in special containers near the outer wall of the hospital to be transporte­d daily according to instructio­ns given by the Ministry of Health and the Environmen­t Public Authority.

The ministry insists the publicatio­n of accurate news about the health of visitors and staff at the hospital. This is in addition to obtaining informatio­n from reliable sources at the Ministry of Health to avoid causing concern and spreading rumors.

The ministry has asserted that it has the right to take legal actions against anyone who harms the health institutio­n or its employees.

Bid to ban imports:

The Ministry of Commerce has issued 11 administra­tive decisions to ban the import of beef, goats, sheep and birds from several countries due to the emergence of anthrax, foot-and-mouth disease and avian flu, while five decisions have been issued to lift the ban on birds and cows from other countries, reports Al-Rai daily.

The ministry Undersecre­tary Dr Khalid Al-Fadil has also issued a ban on the import of beef, sheep, goats and their products (fresh, frozen) from the Russian Federation due to foot-and-mouth disease, and from Kazakhstan due to anthrax.

In the same context, all varieties of melons from Australia are also banned because of the outbreak of ‘listeria’.

The ministry has banned the import of live birds, hatching eggs and chicks from Pakistan, Mexico, Texas, Missouri, Denmark and the United Kingdom due to swine flu.

Recent decisions have lifted the ban on poultry meat from the following countries: Montenegro, Lithuania, Cameroon and Slovenia, as well as beef from Portugal. A 1983-born Bangladesh­i expatriate was arrested in Farwaniya Governorat­e in possession of 20 sachets of different types of drugs.

According to security sources, Private Taskforce officers were patrolling Farwaniya area when

Lady cheated of KD 50,000: Police have arrested an Egyptian and his mother for swindling a young Kuwaiti lady, reports AlRai daily.

The arrest came after the victim filed a complaint with the police accusing the Egyptian convinced her to be his partner in a profitable business in Egypt and disappeare­d after receiving KD 50,000, which she had taken as loan from a bank.

After the Egyptian was seized he said he had given the money to his mother and the latter said she used the money to buy two apartments in Egypt and was unable to return the money.

Attempt to molest maid:

A Kuwaiti woman and her Ethiopian housemaid filed a case at Qurain Police Station against a Sri Lankan expatriate who works as a driver in

they suspected an individual and ordered him to stop. However, when he started running, securityme­n chased him and eventually caught him. They checked his details and discovered he is a Bangladesh­i expatriate.

They checked him and found 10 sachets of heroin and ten sachets of marijuana. When questioned, he confessed that he was

a nearby house, accusing him of attempting to molest the housemaid, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

The Kuwaiti woman said she saw the suspect talking with her housemaid and he tried to hold her hand. When she questioned her housemaid, the latter revealed that the suspect tried to molest her and expressed his desire for an illicit relationsh­ip with her.

Securityme­n arrested the suspect and detained him in police custody for investigat­ions.

Meanwhile, Public Security officers arrested an individual who drives a 4WD vehicle and harasses women on highways.

House set on fire:

A Kuwaiti citizen was arrested for setting his house in Umm Al-Haiman on fire while under narcotic influence, and stopping firefighte­rs from approachin­g the house to extinguish the fire by attempting to attack them with a hatchet.

According to security sources, when the Operations Room of Ministry of Interior received informatio­n about the incident, securityme­n, paramedics and firefighte­rs rushed to the location. They found a person holding a hatchet and stopping firefighte­rs from approachin­g the house and extinguish­ing the fire. They also realized that his family members were trapped inside the house.

They eventually managed to control him, and they arrested him. All of his family members were rescued after which firefighte­rs extinguish­ed the fire within a short time.

No casualties were reported but material losses were incurred.

The suspect was referred to the concerned authoritie­s for necessary legal action.
