Head of the Complaints Committee at the Human Rights Society Lawyer Athra Al-Rifai revealed that more than 157 women in Kuwait had sought help from the physical, psychological and financial violence they experienced, reports Al-Rai daily.

During a workshop organized by the Women’s Committee of Kuwait Lawyers Society, she said, “In 2010, a report of Ministry of Justice revealed 366 cases of violence against women. These cases were not recorded due to fear of parents and the community. In 2011, a survey conducted revealed the existence of sexual violence, under the name of harassment, against women.

Lawyer Al-Rifai went on to say, “The values of adolescents and adults are beginning to decline. Verbal and physical harassment are present in our society”.

She revealed that they were attacked by parents on charges of helping the victims by inciting them to break their customs and traditions, affirming that the members of the committee have now been able to help many of the victims after creating pages on Instagram and Twitter, as well as hold seminars and lectures on the rights of victims and how to help them.

She indicated that, “Women are subjected to violence more than once when they have to explain their situation to all officials at the police station”.
