Afro-Asia Economic Council hails honouring of HH Amir
‘Symbol of humanitarian work’
CAIRO, May 14, (KUNA): The President of Afro-Asia Economic Council in New York Tareq Al-Obaid stressed Sunday that honoring His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was well deserved since he became the symbol and leader of humanitarian work around the world.
Al-Obaid made his remarks to KUNA, on the sideline of his participation in an Arab function to honor His Highness the Amir.
Al-Obaid expressed on behalf of many Kuwaiti officials in the AfroAsian Council’s appreciation on for this honor, noting on the council’s adoption of the title of “global humanitarian Knight and the symbol of humanitarian action” in reference to His Highness the Amir relentless efforts.
Al-Obaid pointed out that the council will mobilize foreign and Arab civil society organizations and international organizations in this regard to honor His Highness the Amir for his efforts, adding that they “will also have another honor for the Amir in the corridors of United Nations in New York and Geneva.” Al-Obaid also expressed hope that this honor will be extended by the Arab League to become an international action through also loving nations and institutes in recognition of His Highness the Amir humanitarian role.
The council’s chief recalled the title of “Sheikh of Diplomacy”, which referred to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber AlSabah when he was Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Meanwhile, an Egyptian official said Sunday His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad AlJaber Al-Sabah’s humanitarian vision alleviated suffering of Arab people, particularly in Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Sudan.
Dr Mufid Shehab, chairman of Egypt’s international law society, said Kuwait has been a pioneer in philanthropy.
Shehab, former minister of Higher Education of Egypt, was speaking in a ceremony to honor His Highness the Amir of Kuwait.
He said Kuwait’s humanitarian contributions over the past five years exceeded USD two billion, thus leading the world in terms charity-to-GDP ratio.
Shehab said Kuwait also offered help for countries suffering from natural disasters like Japan, the Philippines and Turkey.
The Gulf country also hosted three international conferences to help the Syrian people, as well as allocating $100 million for the Yemeni people.
The Palestinian cause occupied great attention from Kuwait’s foreign policy, he said, and the Gulf country was the birthplace of the Palestinian Fatah group. Kuwait also hosted an international conference to rebuild Iraq and pledged $2 billion. Donors, NGOs and financial institutions pledged $30 billion for Iraq.
Kuwait former Information Minister Sami Al-Nesf said His Highness the Amir played a leading role in addressing crises when he was foreign minister, citing conflicts in Bangladesh, between Yemen and Oman, Lebanon and unity of Yemen.
His Highness the Amir, said AlNesf, has always been keen on unity of Arabs and resolution of their conflicts.
