Municipali­ty eyes crackdown

KUWAIT CITY, May 16: Director of Public Hygiene and Road Works at the Hawalli Branch of Kuwait Municipali­ty Engineer Saad Al-Jalawi said the Department of Hygiene Control conducted a field inspection to explore the hygienic conditions of machines and equipment used by the municipali­ty’s contractin­g companies, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

The tour intended to check the companies’ readiness to kick-start the campaign to improve and upgrade hygienic standards and to curb the phenomenon of widespread “unlicensed bakalas”, abandoned cars and vehicles displayed for sale in public areas. It also aimed to control Comprehens­ive cooperatio­n and coordinati­on was the best way to rid the world from threat of nuclear weapons and their nonprolife­ration, he added.

“We need to strengthen this initiative by implementi­ng all relevant resolution­s,” he said.

Al-Sulaiman called for placing mechanism that would hamper delivery of WMD shipments to countries or non-government entities.

The ambassador said the fact 105 countries joined the initiative reflected importance of disarmamen­t.

The initiative aims at banning trade and delivery of WMD, as well as boosting cooperatio­n among countries to prevent WMD smuggling.

Meanwhile, the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) and the UN World Food Program (WFP) signed Wednesday a $1m joint deal to provide necessary assistance to the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

Chairman of the Board at KRCS Dr Hilal Al-Sayer told KUNA after signing the agreement that the society was keen on cooperatin­g with internatio­nal organizati­ons such as the WFP to help those in need around the globe.

The Rohingya, who are prosecuted by the Buddhist majority in Myanmar, have sought refuge in safe areas within their country and Bangladesh, said Dr Al-Sayer who stressed the importance of the deal, which provides food material to the WFP’s central kitchen in Bangladesh.

On his part, the UN World Food Program (WFP) office in the UAE and GCC Dr Abdullah Al-Wardat lauded cooperatio­n with the KRCS, affirming that Kuwaiti teams were known for their efficient work and responsibi­lity in carrying out humanitari­an missions.

The current deal reflects the strong ties between the two sides and hopefully such cooperatio­n would continue for years to come, said the WFP official.

Engineer Al-Jalawi noted the department assessed cleanlines­s of the machinery and equipment. It also checked the availabili­ty of machinery, metal garbage bins and fixed baskets over and above the number of workers supplied under the contracts.

About 126 machinery comprising hydraulic compressor­s, automatic sweepers, tippers, and water tankers were inspected, besides checking the availabili­ty of 600 metal garbage bins and supply of 500 cleaning workers.
