‘Those defending their rights in Palestine are not terrorists’

Society accomplish­es lot over past years

KUWAIT CITY, June 9: Chairman of the Social Reform Society Dr Khaled Al-Mathkour, who recently assumed the leadership of the society stressed on the need to establish the true definition of the term terrorism and stressed those who defend their rights in Palestine are not terrorists, reports Al-Anba daily.

On the role of the Social Reform Society in the circumstan­ces of the region he said, he spoke about what is happening in Syria as a result of the war and the influx of refugees and displaced persons who need aid and assistance as well as in Yemen and the war that has affected Somalia, the trouble spots in Myanmar and others.

Through the ‘Al-Rahma Al-Alamiya committee, he said, the Social Reform Society assists those affected outside Kuwait. The Namaa Zakat and Community Developmen­t committee work within Kuwait and have a wide range of activities in the religious and educationa­l sectors.

In the social work sector the committees as well as good companions­hip sector emphasize the promotion of Islamic values in society and in the youth sector, in addition to the women’s work secretaria­t. The society has accomplish­ed a lot over the past years in the area of reform and renaissanc­e of civilizati­on and achieved good results in all areas away from violence and ignorance.

Speaking of the charity work after HH the Amir received the Humanitari­an Award from the United Nations, he said, charity work in Kuwait is old even predating the discovery of oil when the people of Kuwait were poor and depend on pearl diving for trade.

The people of Kuwait are generous and charity work is now organized by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor. It is also organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and supported by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad.

In this area, he said, everyone knows Kuwait has held donor conference­s the first of its kind to help the people of Syria and the reconstruc­tion of Iraq and other forms of aid.

He disclosed, the society has launched a campaign during this Ramadan under the title ‘We are for them’ to help the needy families and orphans, for the treatment of cancer, and rheumatoid diseases, pay tuition fees for students who are unable to pay.

The Social Reform Society, he said, is one of the oldest societies in Kuwait. It was founded in 1962 and started its work in 1963. It is an Islamic body that works for the common good that Islam has brought and is committed to the Islamic approach based on comprehens­ion and moderation without exaggerati­on or negligence.
