NEW YORK, Oct 11, (KUNA): In light of the growing use of prohibited weapons in all their forms, Kuwait affirmed its stand towards all internationl calls related to weapon disarmament.

This came during a speech deliver by the First Secretary of Kuwait’s permanent delegation to the United Nations Meshari Al-Muzaini, during a session late Wednesday of the Security Council’s on disarmament and international security.

In his speech, Al-Muzaini mentioned that Kuwait has signed and ratified many international agreements and treaties related to disarmament, such as Non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, and the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons.

Kuwait also ratified the Convention on Prohibition and destruction of Biological and Toxin Weapons, Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident, and the additional protocol of the comprehensive safeguards agreements.

Al-Muzaini stressed the importance of these treaties and conventions particularly those related to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The secretary pointed out the right of all States to develop their research and possess nuclear technology for peaceful purposes in line with the safeguards system of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

“Despite Kuwait commitment to international agreements, we are concerned about the continued failure of implementing terms of some treaties in this framework”

Al-Muzaini called on all Member States to work on finding effective ways and means to overcome the growing challenges of international peace and security.

“The establishment of weapon free zone is one of the most important issues of Non-Proliferation Treaty, However, our region is far from achieving this objective with Israel’s continued possession of these weapons and its violation of all international resolutions”, Al-Muzaini explained.

In this regard, he called for sustainable solutions to avoid the dangers of armed conflict.

“The recent attacks by Al Houthi militias on some Saudi Arabia areas civilian, and using chemical weapons in Syria, have made us certain that the risk of proliferation of these weapons has not been achieve despite the existence of treaties and resolutions that criminalize them “. He said.

On the other hand, Al-Muzaini expressed Kuwait’s great concerns of the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons because of its negative impact and contribution to the increase of armed violence and conflicts.

He called for the implementation of the UN Program of Illicit Trade in Small Arms in all its aspects, rather than attempting to restrict the legitimate right of States to obtain their rights in having weapons they needs.

Al-Muzaini expressed the hope that “the meeting will result in reaching an agreement to eliminate nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction to keep the world save and secure.”
