UNESCO hosts Kuwait prize’s awards event

PARIS, Dec 4, (KUNA): The UN cultural agency, UNESCO, hosted an award ceremony on Monday for its joint Kuwaitfund­ed prize for Digital Empowermen­t of Persons with Disabiliti­es, named after the late Amir Jaber Al-Ahmad AlJaber Al-Sabah.

Disabled rights activist Vashkar Bhattachar­jee of Bangladesh was awarded the individual­s category with the organisati­ons’ prize going to Chinese web programmer­s, Tencent.

Amid remarks at the event, Sheikh Mubarak Jaber AlAhmad Al-Sabah said Kuwait, led by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah AlAhmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, is committed to UNESCO’s efforts in support of disabled persons.

Kuwait’s UNESCO representa­tive Adam Al-Mulla said the prize’s importance stems from its noble goals to encourage the integratio­n of the disabled community into the rest of society.

Speaking about the prize, he said it aims to break down barriers faced by disabled learners in obtaining knowledge via the digital world.

For his part, the Minister of Education and Minister Higher Education’s representa­tive Undersecre­tary Bader Al-Mutairi said the ministry is committed to embracing the disabled community in Kuwait, granting them the right to education alongside their able-bodied counterpar­ts.

This includes providing fully-equipped schools catering to all forms of disability.
