KUWAIT CITY, Feb 10: Six National Assembly supplementary election candidates registered Sunday – the fourth day of the registration period, increasing the total number of candidates to 22 including two women.

In another development, although the Assembly is in recess on the occasion of the national holidays, the Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee is preparing to tackle important bills with the government in order to ensure their passage in the sessions slated for March and April.

Committee Chairman MP Ahmed Al-Fadel is hoping for the approval of several bills in March, such as the proposals related to Ja’fari Personal Status Court and cancellation of some penalties stipulated in the Television and Radio Law. He affirmed the committee will take advantage of the holidays to increase parliamentary productivity.

On the other hand, Minister of Commerce and Industry and State Minister for Services Khaled Al-Roudhan confirmed the government and the Assembly are keen on pushing for the improvement of legislation. He expects approval of several bills such as those concerning insurance, family companies and group financing in the next few months. He said these bills aim to improve the work environment in the country, boost the economy and improve commercial, industrial and financial laws.

Furthermore, Kuwaiti television and theatre icons have always been staunch critics of the political arena. Some of them even integrate their criticisms into their productions.

Recently, prominent actress Hayat Al-Fahad criticized ministers and MPs who own huge agricultural plots for leisure purposes only. She claimed each minister and MP owns at least five agricultural plots where they build vacation houses, they neither cultivate the land nor breed farm animals to contribute to food security like the rest of the Kuwaiti public. “These plots are allocated to everyone, even the undeserving,” she added.
