Dotson scores 25 as No. 14 Kansas wins 82-77 in OT at TCU

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina, Feb 12, (AP): Kyle Guy scored 20 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the final two minutes, to help No. 4 Virginia beat No. 8 North Carolina 69-61 on Monday night.

De’Andre Hunter also had 20 points for the Cavaliers (21-2, 9-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who played with veteran poise down the stretch after trailing for a good chunk of the second half.

The Cavaliers were coming off a second loss this season to No. 2 Duke and arrived in Chapel Hill facing the prospect of their first losing streak of any kind in two years. Yet Guy and his teammates rallied from seven down in the final eight minutes to snap UNC’s seven-game winning streak.

Coby White scored 17 points to lead the Tar Heels (19-5, 9-2), who were off to their best start in league play under 16th-year coach Roy Williams. UNC shot just 35 percent for the game.

Kansas 82, TCU 77 In Fort Worth, Texas, Devon Dotson scored 25 points, including six free throws in the final 40 seconds of overtime, and Kansas beat TCU for its second win in a row while starting four freshmen.

After blowing a 12-point lead in the second half, the Jayhawks (19-6, 8-4 Big 12) never trailed in overtime. They broke the final tie on K.J. Lawson’s jumper with 1:09 left before Dotson sealed it at the free-throw line.

Dotson also had 10 rebounds for one of the three double-doubles for Kansas. Ochai Agbaji had 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Dedric Lawson, a junior and the only non-freshman starter, had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Desmond Bane had 18 points for TCU (17-7, 5-6), and Kendric Davis scored 16. Sacramento St 78, Portland St 67 In Sacramento, California, Ethan Esposito and Marcus Graves scored 16 points apiece as Sacramento State defeated Portland State 78-67 on Monday night. Osi Nwachukwu added 15 points for the Hornets.

Bryce Fowler had 10 points for Sacramento State (10-11, 4-8 Big Sky Conference).

Michael Nuga had 19 points for the Vikings (9-14, 4-8). Holland Woods added 11 points. Sal Nuhu had three blocks.

Sacramento State plays Southern Utah at home on Thursday. Portland State faces Northern Arizona at home on Thursday.

Southern U. 76, Jackson St 67 In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Jayden Saddler had a season-high 20 points as Southern defeated Jackson State 76-67 on Monday night.

Richard Lee had 15 points for Southern (4-20, 3-8 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference), which ended its four-game losing streak. Aaron Ray added 15 points and eight rebounds.

Jackson State totaled 42 points in the second half, a season high for the team.

Venjie Wallis scored a career-high 23 points for the Tigers (9-15, 6-5). Lemmie Howard added 15 points. Jayveous McKinnis had 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Jaguars evened the season series against the Tigers with the win. Jackson State defeated Southern 6458 on Jan 14. Southern plays Arkansas-Pine Bluff on the road on Saturday. Jackson State matches up against Prairie View at home on Saturday.

Baylor 59, Oklahoma 53 In Waco, Texas, Devonte Bandoo scored 19 points and Baylor ended a two-game losing streak with a 5953 victory over Oklahoma on Monday night. Bandoo was 5 for 7 from 3-point range to lead a Baylor bench that outscored Oklahoma’s reserves 24-7 to sweep the season series. The Bears won the first meeting 77-47 on Jan 28 in Norman, Oklahoma.

The Bears (16-8, 7-4 Big 12) took control with a 13-2 run after the game was tied at 35, but they didn’t put it away until a Freddie Gillespie putback made it a four-point game with 36 seconds remaining. That was Gillespie’s only basket of the game, but he pulled down three rebounds and added a steal and block in the final three minutes. Jared Butler was the only other Bear in double figures with 11. bama A&M 60 In Normal, Alabama, Martaveous McKnight had 24 points as ArkansasPi­ne Bluff topped Alabama A&M 6960 on Monday night.

McKnight shot 9 for 10 from the line.

Artavious McDyess had 13 points for Arkansas-Pine Bluff (9-15, 6-5 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference). Terrance Banyard added 11 points and seven rebounds. Shaun Doss had 11 points for the road team.

Jalen Reeder had 15 points for the Bulldogs (5-20, 4-7). Andre Kennedy added 14 points. Gerron Scissum had seven rebounds. Alabama St 82, Mississipp­i Val

ley St 59 In Montgomery, Ala, Jacoby Ross had 17 points to lead five Alabama State players in double figures as the Hornets romped past Mississipp­i Valley State 82-59 on Monday night.

A.J. Farrar added 16 points for the Hornets. Leon Daniels chipped in 10, Kevin Holston scored 10 and Reginald Gee had 10. Farrar also had nine rebounds for the Hornets (9-13, 7-4 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference).

Jordan Evans had 21 points for the Delta Devils (3-22, 1-10), who now have lost nine straight games. Kaleb Allison added nine rebounds. Emmanuel Ejeh had 10 rebounds. S. Carolina St 85, Coppin St 84 In Orangeburg, South Carolina, Damni Applewhite scored 21 points and threw down a dunk with two seconds left and South Carolina State beat Coppin State 85-84 on Monday night.

Dejuan Clayton made 1 of 2 foul shots and Coppin State led 84-81 with 27 seconds to left. Taqwain Drummond immediatel­y fouled Applewhite who went to the foul line and made a pair. Lavar Harewood came up with a steal on the Eagles’ next possession to set up Applewhite’s game winner.

Janai Raynor-Powell had 16 points and eight assists for South Carolina State (6-20, 4-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Harewood added 16 points. Jahmari Etienne had 11 points for the hosts.

Clayton scored a career-high 30 points and had six assists for the Eagles (5-21, 5-6). Kent Auslander added 14 points.

The Bulldogs improve to 2-0 against the Eagles this season. South Carolina State defeated Coppin State 70-68 on Jan 14. South Carolina State plays Bethune-Cookman at home on Saturday. Coppin State plays Maryland Eastern Shore on the road on Saturday.
