- By Sebastian Noronha and Freddie Tayoan

Power spins the world around. Power is intoxicating. And (in the words of someone famous), with great power comes great responsibility!

In the wake of the resounding success of the first Superhero meeting held in July 2018, Desert Pioneers Toastmasters Club was back with another spectacular meeting, The Superhero Meeting 2.0! It was held on Feb 11, the Desert Pioneers Superhero Meeting VER. 2.0, was designed to bring out the thrill that we all inherently possess – of being superheroes!

It was an open house invitation made possible with the initiative of the officers of the club. Initiated by Miss Alina Paul, this project aims to invite enthusiasts to be successful public speakers in the future.

The program started exactly at 7 pm with the introduction of the sergeant at arms in wonder man costume, resembling the attire of Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman of the 70s. As the president,

Amrit Pookadan welcomes the members and guests, with warm heart. Then the toastmasters of the day who appears in superwoman costumed Miss Alina Paul introduced the different roles: the timer, ah counter, grammarian and the general evaluator.

The speakers came on the stage with wide range of topic. Miss June Soares presented her speech with Bat Woman’s suite with complete cape and mask, Suhaan Munaf portrayed an ordinary costume of Million Dollar Man and Anwar Adam nailed Batman’s head gear. All were equipped with the power tool of their messages as they started occupying the podium with the power of a taking risk, blank mind with readiness and mentorship.

The second part of the segment was the table topic, an impromptu speech. Miss Areej Jaafar kept pictures of superheroes on the wall and each participant were called randomly on the stage. Each picked picture was with corresponding quotes and questions. Members who went on stage begins to explore and give insights and ideas, for not less than one minute and not more than 2 minutes.

The last segment was the evaluation session with the unique tandem of Miss Farah Khater and Miss Shazia Tabbassum. They are the general evaluators. Acting as the real villains of the show, each evaluator per speaker were called on the stage and positive comments as well as the points of improvements. Definitely, the evaluators wrapped up the whole evaluation with a supportive account to inspire the speakers.

When it comes to speech presentation, specified time is allowed for a given speeches. The timer Miss Suraiya Fatima were raising the cue cards for every qualifying time as the speaker starts to deliver his/her piece. Hari Prasad excel in his scrutinizing ears as he listens and tallies the used of “Ah”, repetitive words and unnecessary used of words. Shiraz Mohammed complied with the grammarian role.

Then the most awaited time came in. Announcement of the winners, the superheroes. The best speaker was bagged by Anwar Adams, best in table topic: Miss Nahida Yeasmin and best in evaluation: Miss Hanan Haloush.

It was concluded by the president’s last presentation of the guests and announcement of the next meeting. He stressed out that all are superheroes of our own style. We should however understand, that being a Superhero is not only about physical strength. It has a lot to do with the emotional quotient and the persona. Simply wearing a costume doesn’t make anyone a Superhero.

Each one of us has a super strength. And here at Toastmasters, one could be a super mentor, a super leader, a super speaker, a super evaluator, and the list could very well go on and on.

And a true Superhero would use his/her strength to only bring positive changes in others’ lives. Let us strive to do exactly the right moves!
