- By Sebastian Noronha

In today’s world of breakneck competition and fast-paced business, not only do we have to keep ourselves informed about the market forces, but also have to strive to be one step ahead of our competitors. And this can only be achieved by relying on man-made automation, namely, machines – of all kinds!

The age of automation is here, and whether we like it or not, it is here to stay! The world as we know it, would come to a standstill in the absence of the level of automation that we have as a species have managed to achieve.

However, we cannot forget the fact that we as humans have not become redundant yet. And we never will be!

No matter what the level of automation may be, and regardless of what proportions of our tasks we manage to automate, the human element just cannot be eliminated!

There are nuances and subtleties that as humans, we bring into the equation; things that no machine, however advanced, will ever be able to duplicate.

As humans there is an abundance of traits and non-tangible assets that we bring to the table. Take for instance, passion. No matter how advanced and state-of-the-art your machine or computer may be, it just cannot be infused with the element of passion!

Passion is something only we, as humans, can bring to the fore.

Same with Initiative, Ambition, Willpower, Fervor, Determination, Dedication, and well, the list could go on and on!

That being said, we as the whole human race, have reached such a stage where we cannot turn back. We cannot say that we no longer require any machines or any automation. Neither can we say that the level of automation we have achieved is enough.

We just have to move ahead. We have to keep making improvements and advances. Or else we perish! It is a choice we have made, and have to live with!

But then, there is also a line we need to draw so as to prevent the machines dictating our lives. We need to strike a healthy balance between automation and the human touch.

The Rise of The Machines need not necessarily mean that the machines should overpower us. We should condition ourselves to understand that we are humans and we are the most powerful machines ever to exist.

We have to remind ourselves that We Control The Machines, and not the other way around!

At Toastmasters International, we believe that each of us is a machine that is designed and built to primarily do a certain task. But we also recognise the fact that The Human

Machine Is Built So Uniquely that it can be trained and taught and groomed to “learn” new things and new talents can be discovered from within.

And this, my friends, cannot be achieved with a machine of iron and steel!

Toastmasters International builds the human machine to become Future Leaders, Innovative Planners, Life Coaches, Outstanding Public Speakers, and develops in the individual almost whatever social skill the person wishes to obtain.
