Some Kuwaiti students opt to stay abroad, complete studies

‘We’re afraid visas will expire’

KUWAIT CITY, May 13: Despite the exacerbati­on of the crisis caused by the coronaviru­s pandemic and the current difficult global state of affairs, a number of scholarshi­p students who are about to graduate have decided not to return home at the present time. They prefer to stay overseas to complete their studies before returning to the homeland with certificat­es for which they have been struggling, reports Al-Qabas daily.

While most of the students were evacuated successful­ly from the United States of America to Kuwait, some of them were compelled to stay for fear of their study visas expiring. The students in question refused to evacuate, because they are afraid to through difficulty in renewing their study visas later, which will to pave way for their return to America.

Even as many of them insisted on waiting in America until the crisis ends, others considered returning to Kuwait to be with their families under the current circumstan­ces despite the expiration of their study visas, calling on the Cultural Office to help them overcome the problem to be able graduate.

Several graduate students evacuated recently said they are waiting for the US Embassy to renew their study visas, so they can complete the academic year and graduate, while others are going on with their studies in the United States.

Student Hussein Murad narrated the situation of several graduating students, saying they chose to stay in the United States because of the imminent expiration of their visas. He indicated a large number of them are expected to graduate in the next two semesters and are afraid that their visas will not be renewed if they should return to Kuwait, so they preferred staying in the United States until graduation.

He pointed out that some of the students returned to Kuwait, because they renewed their study visas one or two years ago, so they have no worries about their visas expiring. He indicated the condition of students who decided to stay in America are stable, as life has begun to improve in many American states, in terms of the availabili­ty of basic provisions.

He reiterated the Kuwaiti students are cooperatin­g with each other to facilitate living, and that several of them want the US Embassy in Kuwait to resolve the study visa problem, while others hope to return to the country after completing their education.
