Corona cases soar in Qatar

Eleven new cases in Lebanon

DOHA, May 13, (KUNA): Qatar announced, on Tuesday, 1,526 new cases of the coronaviru­s (COVID-19) in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 25,149 cases.

According to the Health Ministry, recoveries from the virus were at 179, putting the grand total at 3,019.

The ministry indicated that the new infections were sent to quarantine to receive proper medical treatment.

Qatar records drastic hike of coronaviru­s infections

Meanwhile, Qatar had declared Monday staggering 1,103 new infections with the novel coronaviru­s (COVID-19) raising the toll of such cases in the small Gulf country to 23,623.

Qatari Ministry of Health said in a statement most of the contaminat­ions were among expatriate workers, adding medical teams examined groups of foreign workers in several regions, detecting infections at an early stage.

Moreover, there was rise in infections among citizens and expatriate­s who had been in close contact with relatives who in turn got the viral bug at work or other places. It also reported 87 recovery cases, bringing total count of such cases to 2,840.

Qatar, of nearly 11,000 square kilometer size, is populated by some 2.8 million people, many of whom are expatriate­s of various nationalit­ies.

Bahrain

Up to 173 people in the Kingdom of Bahrain tested positive for the novel coronaviru­s (COVID-19), Bahraini Ministry of Health said on Tuesday.

The ministry said 30 patients recovered bringing whole number of the recuperate­d to 2,182.

Existing cases getting treatment amounts to 3,218 including 3,213 in stable condition and five in intensive care wards.

The ministry reported earlier today the 9th death case -- a Bahraini aged 80.

UAE

The United Arab Emirates has suffered two new deaths with the novel coronaviru­s (COVID-19) raising toll since outbreak of the pandemic in the Gulf country to 203.

In a press statement on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health and Social Prevention stated that 783 people tested positive for the virus in the past 24 hours, raising toll of infections to 19,661.

Up to 631 patients recovered from the virus, bringing whole number of recoveries to 6,012.

The ministry said the new cases were discovered as a result of conducting more than 32,000 tests.

Oman

Omani Ministry of Health declared on Tuesday recording 148 new coronaviru­s infections, ringing the tally to 3,721.

The Official Oman News Agency said 33 of the cases were of Omani citizens and 115 others of expatriate­s.

It added that 1,250 patients have recovered so far, however 17 others succumbed to the ailment and passed away.

Jordan

Jordan declared on Tuesday recording three coronaviru­s infection cases raising the toll to 576.

Minister of Health Saad Jaber said at a news briefing that among the infection cases were three Arab truck drivers, three quarantine­d students who have recently returned from the United States of America and five persons who had been in close contact with a single truck driver who lives in the province of Al-Mafraq.

The kingdom recorded today no new recoveries, while 122 patients remained under treatment. Meanwhile, local authoritie­s conducted 4,500 examinatio­ns bringing total number of such tests for the virus to 123,000.

For his part, Minister of Informatio­n Amjad Al-Adayla who also spoke during the same briefing declared that civil servants due to go back to work on May 26 must adhere to standing health regulation­s.

The minister advised the public sector personnel to wear medical masks and gloves, maintain social distancing, limit gatherings and paper swap.

Duration for peoples’ free public movement was extended for an hour, thus the new program now begins from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. after which a curfew is imposed throughout the night.

Moreover, public and private transports will be allowed inside governorat­es as of Tuesday.

As to situation during the upcoming Eid Al-Fitr, the minister said the government decided to enforce full curfew in the first day of the Eid, to be followed with partial the next day and full one each weekend.

Land checkpoint­s, air and sea ports and mosques will remain shuttered long distance teaching will proceed.

Algeria

Eight people who contracted the novel coronaviru­s died in Algeria in past hours, raising fatalities’ toll to 515, Algerian Ministry of Health said on Tuesday.

There were also 176 newly-recorded cases of contaminat­ion with COVID-19, with the overall count of infections since outbreak of the pandemic in the North African nation to 6,067, according to the ministry.

It also reported 157 new recover cases increasing number of patients who were discharged from hospitals to 2,998. (end)

Turkey

Turkey, on Tuesday, confirmed 53 more deaths from the novel coronaviru­s in the country over the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 3,894.

The total number of registered coronaviru­s cases increased to 141,457 as 1,704 more people tested positive for the virus, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said as reported by Anadolu Agency (AA).

So far, a total of 98,889 have recovered with 3,109 cases today, Koca said.

He also stressed that 37,451 tests were conducted over the past day, with the overall number of tests hitting 1.4 million.

Turkey is currently treating 1,045 patients in intensive care units, according to the figures.

Tunisia

The Tunisian Ministry of Health said on Wednesday that no additional coronaviru­s cases were reported in the country for the second day in a row.

Thus, the total number of infections with the highly contagious bug in Tunisia stands at 1,032, the ministry said in a press statement.

A total of 740 patients have also recovered from the respirator­y disease, while the mortality rate in the country remains at 45, according to the statement.

In addition, medial teams conducted 614 tested for the Covid-19 over the last 24 hours, only 11 of which were positive, it added.

Morocco

Moroccan Ministry of Health said Tuesday 137 people tested positive for the coronaviru­s to increase total cases to 6,418.

Director of pandemic department at the ministry Mohammad Al-Youbi said 180 people have recovered from the virus to increase recoveries to 2,991.

Deaths stood at 188 people, he added.

Lebanon

Lebanese Ministry of Health declared on Tuesday 11 new coronaviru­s infection cases in last 24 hours bringing toll of contaminat­ions to 870.

The ministry said in a statement that no deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, thus the tally of mortalitie­s remained at 26.

Proportion of recoveries steadied at 234 and number of tests conducted, in past 24 hours, amounted to 1,538.

Lebanon has declared a state of general mobilizati­on effective until 24th of the current month.

Egypt

Egyptian Ministry of Health said Tuesday 11 persons died of the coronaviru­s and there were 347 people testing positive for the virus.

Ministry spokesman Dr. Khaled Mujahed said in a statement that 154 people have recovered and left the quarantine.

He added total deaths reached 544 and tally of infections amounted to 10,093.

Iraq

Iraqi Ministry of Health declared on Tuesday recording two deaths and 95 infection cases from the novel coronaviru­s raising the toll of contaminat­ions with the viral germ to 2,913.

The ministry said in a statement that among the overall cases, 112 of them had succumbed to the pandemic and died and 1,903 were pronounced cured of the contagious disease. Iraq’s Kurdistan Region is now past the risk of the novel coronaviru­s (Covid-19) and region-wide life is back to normal, announced the minister of health Sunday.
