Kuwait kitchen reopens, supplies meals to needy in ‘isolated’ areas

Families benefit from donations

KUWAIT CITY, June 25 : Al-Salam Society for Humanitarian and Charity Activities reopened its “#response_ Kuwait_kitchen” after suspending operations for a period of 25 days due to compelling circumstances. The kitchen has been reopened to prepare meals and distribute them to needy people residing in areas that have been institutionally isolated, reports Al-Rai daily.

Regarding the idea to establish “#response_Kuwait_kitchen”, the main chef in charge of the kitchen Osama Al-Qassar said, “The kitchen was established before the month of Ramadan after His Highness the Amir asked his people to respond to Kuwait’s calls in times of need. At that time, my brother Hisham Al-Aoun from Al-Salam Society for Humanitarian and Charity Activities contacted me and suggested we open a kitchen to support the affected migrant workers in the isolated areas.

We worked with three colleagues to establish the kitchen in one of the wedding halls in Riggae area. On the first day, we cooked 700 chicken biryani meals.

The kitchen activities continued until 15 Ramadan, and the work was taxing, but we managed to pull through by the grace of the Almighty.”

He revealed, “A problem occurred in Riggae area, and we stopped for 25 days. We then moved to Adailiya after taking necessary measures including health licenses and others”.

Al-Qassar added, “We now cook around 400 to 500 meals, and all meals are aimed for donation for the sake of Almighty Allah.”

In his role, the director of Al-Salam Society for Humanitarian and Charity Activities, Dr. Nabil Al-Aoun, said, “The society has been donating since the beginning of the crisis by providing meals to the affected workers.”

He explained that more than 1,800 food baskets get distributed in a single day with the cooperation of the Ministry of Interior.

The society will continue its new campaign “Let us cool them down”, which aims at distribution of refrigerators, air conditioners and coolers to needy families inside Kuwait.

Regarding the food baskets distributed during the crisis, Al-Aoun said, “Since the start of the crisis, the society has distributed more than 150,000 food baskets, about 50,000 health baskets, more than half a million hand sanitizers, and more than 5,000 automated sterilizers.”

He revealed that the society provided logistical support to the state institutions such as blankets and bed sheets, as well as installed more than 46 cabins and more than 50 sunshades for the Ministry of Interior and provided more than 800,000 meals.

Regarding the financing of the campaigns, Al-Aoun said the “#response_Kuwait_kitchen” and “Let us cool them down” campaigns received donations from well-wishers, affirming that so far more than 7,000 families have registered in its app, which the current budget of KD 70 thousand can cover. He added that he hopes it will benefit as many families as possible.
