Youngsters lead Hyderabad to 7-run win over Chennai in IPL

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Oct 3, (AP): The youngsters of Sunrisers Hyderabad came to the fore in beating Chennai Super Kings by seven runs in the Indian Premier League.

The 19-year-old Priyam Garg and 20-year-old Abhishek Sharma combined for 77 runs from 69-4 and topscored for Hyderabad in setting 164-5 to defend.

The 18-year-old Abdul Samad, a batsman who part-time leg-spins, was then entrusted to bowl the last over of the match, when Chennai needed 28 to win with Mahendra Singh Dhoni and

Sam Curran in the middle.

The over started badly for Samad with five wides, and Dhoni hit a boundary, but three singles followed and the last ball was a six by Curran. But Samad conceded only 20 and could celebrate. Chennai was short on 157-5.

Hyderabad’s second win in four days left Chennai on the bottom of the eight-team standings after a third straight defeat in four matches. Hyderabad won the toss but the top order misfired. Jonny Bairstow was bowled by a Deepak Chahar inswinger on the fourth ball. Manish Pandey hit the first five boundaries before he was out for 29.

Kane Williamson paired with David Warner but they were gone three overs later on consecutive balls. Warner was out on 28 to a superb juggling catch on the boundary by Faf du Plessis, and Williamson ran himself out on 9.

Garg and Sharma started together on 0. Sharma was the aggressor first, then Garg got going taking 4-6-4 off Curran. Sharma was dropped on 35 and 39 off Chahar but in the same eventful over he was caught behind on 31 off 24 balls in the 18th over.

Garg finished on 51 not out off 26 balls with Samad on 8 not out.

Chennai’s reply started too slowly and unravelled. Shane Watson chopped on to his stumps on 1, and du Plessis was just getting into his stride – four boundaries in eight balls – when he was run out on 22 from the non-striker’s end.

When Kedar Jadhav was out for 3 off 10 balls to a good reaction catch by Warner, Chennai were 42-4 in the ninth over.
