Union rout Mainz for 1st victory of season

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla, Oct 3, (AP): Anthony Davis got most of his points with a feathery shooting touch. LeBron James flexed his muscle to bulldoze his way to damage. And whenever the lead looked even the tiniest bit threatened, the Los Angeles Lakers had an answer.

The NBA Finals are halfway to a coronation.

James finished with 33 points, nine rebounds and nine assists, Davis made 14 of his first 15 shots on the way to 32 points, and the Lakers took a 2-0 lead in the title series by beating the short-handed Miami Heat 124-114 on Friday night. The Lakers shot 51%, making 16 consecutive shots from 2-point range in a stretch that started late in the first quarter and ended late in the third.

James and Davis were the first Lakers duo to score at least 32 points in a Finals game since Game

3 against New Jersey in 2002, when Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant did it.

“It’s very humbling that we can be even mentioned with those greats,” James said. Shaq and Kobe got rings that year. James and Davis are two wins away.

“Those guys are playing at an extremely high level, and hopefully we can get two more wins,” Lakers coach Frank Vogel said.

Jimmy Butler finished with 25 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds for Miami, which played without injured starters Bam Adebayo (neck and left shoulder) and Goran Dragic (torn left plantar fascia). The Heat scored 39 points in the third quarter and that was only good enough to cut a 14-point halftime deficit to a 10-point hole going into the fourth, mainly because they just couldn’t get enough stops.

“Look, I love these guys. I love the way we compete,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “We have to figure out how to overcome this and get over the top.

Game 3 is Sunday night. It’s unclear if Dragic, Adebayo or both could return; each lobbied to play Friday night, before the Heat had to make the call to keep them sidelined.

BERLIN, Oct 3, (AP): American teen Gio Reyna set up three goals for Borussia Dortmund in a 4-0 win over Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

The 17-year-old Reyna, who started the season with an assist and a goal in Dortmund’s 3-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach, assisted Erling Haaland in the 31st minute, Emre Can in the 47th and set up Haaland to score his second in the 66th.

Substitute Felix Passlack wrapped up the scoring in injury time.

Dortmund, who lost their previous game in Augsburg, had looked set for another frustrating afternoon after creating little of note until Haaland made the breakthrough. Freiburg midfielder Nicolas Höfler lost the ball to Dortmund captain Marco Reus, and Reyna

It’s also unclear how much it will matter.

This is the 24th time that James has had a 2-0 series lead; his teams in Cleveland, Miami and LA are 23-0 in the previous instances. And the last time the Lakers franchise had wasted a 2-0 lead was in the 1969 finals against Boston.

“Until we win four games, we haven’t accomplished our goal,” Lakers guard Alex Caruso said. “It’s been over a year together and we’ve talked about the same goal from Day One. We’re still here chasing that same goal. Until we get four wins, played it on for the 20-year-old Norwegian to fire inside the far post.

Reyna floated in a corner for Can to score Dortmund’s second, and the American capped his outstanding display with another perfectly timed pass for Haaland to get his fourth goal in three games.

Borussia Mönchengladbach beat Cologne 3-1 in the Rhine derby to increase the pressure on the home side’s coach Markus Gisdol.

Cologne have lost all three games so far and were fortunate not to concede more against Gladbach, who struck the crossbar late on after goals from Alassane Plea, Stefan Lainer and a penalty from Lars Stindl. Elvis Rexhbecaj scored Cologne’s consolation.

we’re staying hungry.”

Kelly Olynyk scored 24 points for the Heat, who trailed by as many as 32 in Game 1 and – even without Adebayo and Dragic – were far more competitive in Game 2. Miami got within nine points in the fourth, but never got close enough to truly put a scare into the Lakers.

“Maybe we’ve just got to play a lot harder, to know that’s how we’re going to squeak out a win in the end,” Butler said. “There really isn’t too much to say to our guys. We understand what we have to do.” the game due to a high number of coronavirus infections in Cologne.

Eintracht Frankfurt came from behind to beat Hoffenheim 2-1 and end the visitors’ perfect start, Werder Bremen held on for a 1-0 win over promoted Arminia Bielefeld, and Sasa Kalajdzic earned promoted Stuttgart a 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

Former Germany striker Max Kruse launched Union Berlin to a 4-0 rout of Mainz for their first Bundesliga win of the season.

Finland forward Joel Pohjanpalo also scored, just seconds after coming on for his debut, to wrap up a debut to forget for new Mainz coach JanMoritz Lichte.

Former assistant coach Lichte took over Mainz on an interim basis on Monday when the club fired Achim Beierlorzer after losing their first two games and players boycotted a training session in support of a demoted player, Adam Szalai. Union have no such problems. Kruse opened the scoring in the 13th minute with his first goal on his first start for the club. Sheraldo Becker crossed from the right and Kruse’s powerful header set off celebrations

among the socially distanced supporters in attendance.

Up to 4,400 fans were allowed in Stadion an der Alten Försterei under measures designed to combat the risk of coronavirus infections. Normally 22,000 would attend.

Union continued pushing forward against the harmless visitors, but failed to convert any more chances before the break.

That changed early in the second half, when Union captain Christopher Trimmel had plenty of space to cross for Marcus Ingvartsen to convert from close range.

Marvin Friedrich scored with a header to a free kick in the 63rd, and Pohjanpalo made the most of more lackluster defending when he scored a minute later. The goal came seconds after the Finland forward came on in place of Kruse for his Union debut after joining on loan from Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.

Lorius Karius, who joined Union on loan from Liverpool, was forced to wait for his debut as coach Urs Fischer kept faith with Andreas Luthe in goal.
