Burton, Brown, Annett and Herbst out from title contention

-

But he ran out of time and finished 1.27 seconds behind the Ducati of Petrucci, who mastered the soaking wet conditions well on a drenched Le Mans track for a second career win.

Espargaro was behind for KTM.

Quartararo started from pole position for the third time this season, starting ahead of Ducati’s Jack Miller and Petrucci.

But after five laps Quartararo dropped down to 11th on a miserable day for Yamaha, which saw seven-time world champion Valentino Rossi crash on Lap 1 of 26.

The Italian veteran was chasing a 200th career podium but his race ended on Turn 3 when he went down.

Fortunately for Quartararo, the Suzuki of Mir was even further back in 17th after starting from 14th.

With 10 laps remaining, Italian rider Andrea Dovizioso led from Petrucci and Miller in a Ducati 1-23.

Then Alex Rins made a big push and got into second place, but the Spaniard pushed his Suzuki too hard and went off his bike with seven laps remaining. His crash also caused Miller to fall, and the Australian was visibly angry when he got back to the team garage.

Dovizioso finished in fourth spot and Mir was 11th.

British riders Cal Crutchlow and Bradley Smith; Spaniard Tito Rabat and Italian Franco Morbidelli also crashed on a track that stayed slippery throughout. 1.71 seconds

CONCORD, NC, Oct 11, (AP): A.J. Allmendinger splashed his way through a torrential rainstorm that turned Charlotte Motor Speedway into a slip-and-slide to win the Xfinity Series race on the hybrid road course-oval “Roval”.

Cavallini netted the winner four minutes later, scoring on the rebound of a shot by Fredy Montero.

Damir Kreilach opened the scoring, converting a feed from Justin Meram from close range in the 37th minute for Real Salt Lake (4-7-6).

Inter 1, Dynamo 0

In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Lewis Morgan scored on a penalty kick in the 57th minute, leading Inter Miami a 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo.

The shot was set up when Houston’s Aljaz Struna committed a foul in the penalty area. The goal was Morgan’s

Allmendinger won for the second time this season in 10 starts for Kaulig Racing. He’s easily the most experienced NASCAR driver at both road course racing and driving in wet conditions – Allmendinger has a long career in multiple formulas, including sports cars and open-wheel, which both race in the rain.

“I don’t know what we just witnessed,” Allmendinger said. “I was complaining the whole race. That was miserable. Crazy. Those conditions, to me, it’s not a lot of fun.

“I thought at times it was dangerous, the hydroplaning. At times I thought we should have stopped it.”

Allmendinger’s victory in near darkness on a soaking wet track ended a sloppy race marred by multiple slides through standing water. It was an elimination race for the Xfinity Series playoffs and Harrison Burton, Brandon Brown, Michael Annett and Riley Herbst were knocked from title contention.

Allmendinger had a short celebration before he had to transition to NBC Sports’ booth to call IMSA’s debut on Charlotte’s purpose-built Roval. While he was in victory lane, the soaking wet fans still in attendance loudly chanted “A.J.! A.J.! A.J.!” as Allmendinger was shown on Charlotte’s massive video board that illuminated the infield.

“In the infield with no lights, and the world’s biggest jumbotron blaring, I mean, you couldn’t see anything,” Allmendinger said. “I was just guessing where the corners were and just praying that when you hit the puddles you don’t go off the racetrack.”
