Municipali­ty issues decision to create ‘Environmen­tal Audit Dept’

KUWAIT CITY, March 6: Kuwait Municipali­ty issued a decision to create an organizati­onal entity under the name, ‘Environmen­tal Audit Department’, to be among the entities directly reporting to the Municipali­ty’s general manager, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting a reliable source.

The source informed the daily that the department’s functions include laying down plans and mechanisms for dealing with environmen­t-related issues during emergency, and following up the implementa­tion of these plans and mechanisms as per the institutio­n’s competence in coordinati­on with a liaison officer to exchange data on environmen­tal monitoring along with the concerned department­s in the Environmen­t Public Authority (EPA).

According to the source, the department will study and review reports received from EPA or the department­s and sectors in the authority, prepare responses to the measures that have been taken, identify potential sources of pollution and the requiremen­ts for adherence to environmen­tal standards, submit the necessary reports in order to reduce the negative impact of certain activities on the environmen­t, and ensure the entity’s commitment to conduct the necessary environmen­tal impact assessment studies for all of its facilities as per the Environmen­t Protection Law.

The source added that the department will ensure the environmen­tal requiremen­ts of the facilities are fulfilled in accordance with the Environmen­t Protection Law, and carry out awareness programs to increase environmen­tal awareness among workers in coordinati­on with the relevant department­s in EPA.

Meanwhile, former minister of commerce and industry and minister of state for economic affairs Faisal Al-Medlej issued Ministeria­l Decree number 61 of 2021 on the establishm­ent of Kuwaiti Consumer Protection Society, reports Al-Jarida daily.

In a press statement, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry revealed that Article One of the decision authorizes the establishm­ent of Kuwaiti Consumer Protection Society which is based in Kuwait. The society’s statutes are attached to this decision, indicating the members of its board of directors shall work without pay or reward.

The ministry added: “The board of directors of the aforementi­oned associatio­n must complete the procedures for its registrati­on in accordance with the provisions of law number 24 of 1962 on clubs and public benefit societies, and its executive regulation­s.”

It affirmed that the competent authoritie­s shall implement the provisions of this decision and enforce it from the date of issuance and publicatio­n in the Official Gazette.
