KUWAIT CITY, June 17: Chairperson of the Union of Consumer Cooperative Societies Dr Saad AlShabo said the union has started determining the number of workers in the cooperative sector who are stranded abroad, in response to the request of cooperative societies in line with the need to fulfill the requirements of the current stage and for the central markets and branches to offer the best services to consumers, reports Al-Rai daily.

In a statement to the daily, Al-Shabbo disclosed this step was taken after many cooperatives societies urged the union to ask the health authorities to exempt their workers from the decision to ban the entry of expatriates; given that work in the cooperatives has been affected by the long absence of workers whose services are badly needed.

Exempt

“As part of the role of the union to closely follow up changes in the cooperative sector, we received the request of several cooperative societies to exempt their workers, who are stranded abroad, from the entry ban. The initial count revealed that around 10 workers in each cooperative are stranded abroad,” Al-Shaboo narrated.

He affirmed that the request comes with the commitment to strictly comply with the precautionary health measures applied at Kuwait International Airport. “The return of these workers will be a positive factor in facilitating cooperative work, preserving the gains and capabilities of shareholders, and providing the highest quality of service to consumers and shareholders,” he asserted.

He pointed out “this demand comes at a time when a large number of cooperative workers inside the country want to leave, especially since the corona pandemic crisis is now on its second year and they are far from their families. The union will address the health authorities to ensure the smooth flow of work in cooperatives, considering the vital role played by the cooperative sector.”

The Indian Ambassador to Kuwait HE Sibi George paid a visit to the chief of Kuwait Fire Services Directorate (KFSD) Lieutenant-General Khaled Rakan Hamad Al-Mekrad. During the visit both sides discussed ways of strengthening cooperation especially in the domain of security, Diaspora matters and matters of mutual interest.
